A Good Low Water Day on Watauga Gorge (Carnage Report Inside)

I had the privilege on Sunday (4-20-08) to lead the Damascus Boyz on their PFD of the Watauga Gorge.  The level spiked up to a mighty 164 CFS early that morning from a small rain we received on Saturday, but it began to quickly fall off to 118 CFS by the time we put on… Everything is still runnable at this level except Stateline Falls.  It looks worse than Sunshine at this level.  I know only four brave souls who have run Stateline at this level and one of them broke his boat, even with a good line…

Anyway, good lines where had by all except for two incidents:

  1. I got body slammed in Knuckles, which involved me looping my Mega Rocker on top of me after taking a pretty hard piton.  I missed the boof flake rock on far left and plugged straight down the drop to a sudden halt. I was fortunate that it did not result in a vertical pin, but then I realized I was flipping over onto my head…  I did bang up my hand and shoulder pretty good, but I salvaged a combat roll after my beat down… Good Times!  I was happy I had 3″ of foam in front of my feet and the uni-strut bulk head system.  Can you say ankle saver?
  2. Brian had a dry hair day until the final rapid, Rewind.  He flipped after he smacked a rock and hit his hand on a rock while under water, but he rolled up OK.
