Kids and Kayaks

I’ve read a few post from other parents with kids. I especially like what you can read here on the http://worldkayakblogs.com/rapidpirate blog. He seems to have a good feel for how to get his kids in to boating. This has been on my mind a good bit as my soon-to-be 4 year old daughter has been pushing to “go boating like daddy” for a good year now. She’s almost to the point where she can swim so it looks like next year will be her first on the water. She already has a boat  an Inazone 212 that she got for Christmas last winter.

I struggle a lot on how to go about getting her into the sport in a way that she enjoys so that it becomes an activity that she can enjoy.

So the other day, I received the Jackson Kayak promo DVD in the mail and decided to take a look. She was doing her own thing until Emily Jackson popped up on the screen with her pink kayak. Lauren got interested at that point and watch the segment with Emily. Afterward she asked”can I be like her Dad?”  That evening I took her with me to the Friday Night Fun Series. She got a real kick out of watching Paige paddling a playboat and again asked if she could be like Paige when she grows up.  Those two incidents really made my day. I hope I can keep her interested in kayak over time.

Anyway just a couple thoughts on my kid and getting her into kayaking.
