Hit the Books Hard
2 04 2008I had delayed it long enough. Last weekend I did my ACA instructor certification exam. Although I spend most of my free time playing in the water, I really don’t mind admitting I was pretty nervous about it ICE. I didn’t realize how many bad habits I’d picked up over my kayaking career until I took the instructor development workshop 1 year ago. It was the most humbling experience of my kayaking career. Since then, I’ve worked on trying to iron out the bad habits, learn new skills and practice teaching with the help of friends (in particular, James B.). I also read several books (multiple times) including Ken Whitings Play Boaters Handbook, EJ’s Strokes and Concepts and William Nearly’s Animated Manual. These helped a lot.
