Boise HomeTown ThrowDown #4

Here at Boise we’ve had our last Hometown Throwdown of the year. A big thank you to everyone thats helped make it such a fun year.
As usual our competition was on the second feature at the amazing Kelly’s Whitewater Park in Cascade, Idaho.
We had eleven competitors, two of which were all the way from Portland, Oregon.
Everyone had three rides, best two count, to show off their tricks. There were a few less ariels than before mostly because of the lower water that made the wave shallower than usual. There were …

Cascade had its second HomeTown ThrowDown this past Saturday. We had eleven participants that all competed in the second feature of Kelly’s Whitewater Park. The weather was in the high 80′s and the Payette North fork was a perfect temp.
Water levels are still above normal compared to last summer, which made the wave a little flushy, but nice and deep. Most of the tricks were loops and space godzillas. Wesley even did a few clean cartwheel paddle spin combos.
Three of our competitors were all the way from Bend, Oregon. And …

Idaho Hometown Throwdown #1 2013

Idaho’s first Hometown Throwdown of the year was finally on a warm sunny day and we had great flows at Kelly’s Whitewater Park. Temps in the mid 70′s and warmer water meant no poggies or skull-caps.
With these flows the second feature is great for loops, space godzillas, cartwheels, pretty much anything you can throw in a wave-hole. We ran three hole rides and had a couple of swims. Swims to me mean people are getting out of their comfort range and LEARNING! So kudos to those swimmers
We also …

Saturday was out last Throwdown for the year in Idaho. Weather in
Cascade was awesome with a bit of a breeze. But you could tell that
Fall is not far off.
I am so jazzed to see the kids from Kelly’s Kayak Academy continuing
to return and have Troy Wilson run a clinic for them prior to the
Throwdowns.  These kids are really excited about paddling.
Water was down to about 1400 cfs (from the normal 2200), so made it a
bit shallow but the more skilled paddlers could still throw ends and
loop. Water still feels good …

Who would’ve thought the second throw down of the year, two weeks later then the first, would have worse weather than the first? It snowed before the competition and there was sleet directly afterwards. The temperature was around 43 when the competition started, but the water was a bit warmer.
Eight boaters braved the snow and sleet, two of which were from Stanley.  For such a cold day, everyone really put on a show.
KWP offered a solid feature once again and the hot dogs definitely hit the spot.
On Saturday, the North …

Idaho Throwdown #5

Yet another awesome Throwdown for Idaho, but sadly, its the last one of the year. We had around hundred spectators for this event. The KWP wave was primo for smaller boats. It was shallower than the last few times, but it made up for it by being stickier. Our group consisted of more people from out of town than locals. Out of the nine of us, five were from Bend, Oregon. It was awesome having that group paddling with us. They did an excellent job, especially for having so few …

Idaho Throwdown #4

ThrowDown number four is over for Boise. Yesterday I was up at Kelly’s Whitewater Park along with nine other competitors- two of which were from Utah. I think this was our first TD with only one junior, which was me. So I was thrown in with the mens category. Like before, we were on the second feature and it was perfect for our group. There were a few more kayakers new to surfing that were game to get in there. All of them did …

We had another Throwdown up at KWP last Saturday. We had thirteen competitors, three new to throwdowns. The high water changed the waves a bit so the second feature wasn’t too sticky but nice and deep for loops and cartwheels. The top wave was super sticky and big, so we opted for the second feature. Having the bridge to the island sure was convenient and even allowed for spectators to come over to watch. After two hole rides we held a boatercross again. The boatercross seems to be …

Idaho Throwdown #2

Yesterday was this seasons opening day for Kelly’s Whitewater park and the second Throwdown for Idaho. The weather forecast was bleak with snow expected for the day, however we arrived in cascade with sunny skies and a temp of 36 degrees.

We began the day at 8:30 with a fantastic KWP opening-day breakfast of pancakes with awesome berries and sausage – what a way to start the day! Next we had a dedication of the bridge to rock island. It’s pretty incredible to watch …

Idaho Throwdown #1 2011

Last Friday we had our first  Idaho Hometown Throwdown of the year at the gutter. We had a good turn out for a chilly April evening, 10 competitors and a bunch of spectators  Alpenglow was nice enough to bring a gaggle of demo boats for whoever wanted to try them, including the new Rock Stars from Jackson kayak which drew lots of “Oooo’s and Ahhhh’s” from those that tried them out.
The wave wasn’t the best for aerial tricks, but a great front surf and spin wave. Mychal Hayes was the …

I’ll have to just start by stating this – This Throwdown was way too much fun! Let me count the ways:

E.J., Dane and Family showed up
Kids from the team trials in Missoula showed up
There were tons of spectators
It was 4th of July weekend
The water and weather finally warmed up
Did I mention that E.J., Dane and …

Idaho Hometown Throwdowns for 6/24 and 6/26. With cancellations for high water we ended up with 2 Throwdowns in 3 days. Thursday evening we had a TD at the Gutter in Horseshoe Bend. The eddy was tough and everyone was tired at the end of the night.
Big thanks to Sean Bierle of Alzar School for helping score the variety on this night. Mike Voorhees hit cartwheels, split-wheels and backstabs. Tyler and Willard both had a split-wheel as well.
The youth had tons of energy, but were the tough eddy access as …

Boise Hometown Throwdown #6

Boise’s final Hometown Throwdown of the year was a great finish to the series. We even had a special guest appearance by Reno Jackson paddler Sage Donnelly. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting this little gal, you are missing out – she is personality-plus!   (and a great little paddler!)
Seth Stoenner owned the hole with flurries of aerial moves – his smooth style makes paddling look so easy… We ran two hole runs and then a couple of Boater-x heats. We didn’t draw prizes until about an …

Boise Hometown Throwdown #4

Boise’s 4th Throwdown was held under clear skies and a comfortable 80 degrees (usually hovering around 100 right now!) We had a ton of spectators at this event, which made it even more fun.
The crew from Cascade Raft showed up again and our slew of youth. Our friend and long time paddler Willard dedcided not to let the raft guides have all the fun and jumped in the mix.
The Gutter is gets a little shallow in the trough this time of year and cartwheels are tricky, but quite a few …

Payette & Boise River Revival Results

Last weekend we had a great time at the Payette & Boise River (PBR) Revival. Despite some threatening weather, even a little rain, the event was a blast! Jackson Kayak Regional Paddler Mark Cecchini wrote the following  report of the weekends event and results are posted at the bottom:
The 2009 PBR Revival went off just as the Payette River system marked peak water levels for the season.  The high water conditions created truly spectacular venues for the competitors throughout the weekend.  The events kicked off on Friday, June 5, with …

For the first time a Boise Throwdown was threatened by bad weather. We have been fortunate and always had sunny weater and reasonable temps. Last night, however, with only an hour to go until showtime we had a huge thunderstorm pass over Horseshoe Bend and pelt us with hail and lots of lightning. But by 5pm we were back to beautiful sunshine and a great evening on the river.
We had 12 paddlers turn out for the event. Our youngest, at 8 years old, was Hayden. He participated last year as …

Boise Hometown Throwdown #1 for 2009

Unlike Reno, Boise’s Throwdown was sunny and beautiful – temp at kickoff was 63. Payette river levels have been great for the past couple of weeks and while the water is still cold it is fare more comfortable than March.
It was great to see everyone again and it was great to catch up with those we haven’t seen since September or October.
We ended up with only 6 paddlers at this event as 7 of our regulars were on a trip to California to paddle and three other regulars had kids …

Boise’s last Homtown Throwdown of the season was a great finish to our Throwdown series – hard to believe it’s over for the season. Temps near 80, lots of sun, great contestants and spectators made for an enjoyable evening. Even with school in full swing we had gaggle of kids and several adults ready to show their stuff. It is amazing to see the progress everyone made over the season!
With the shorter days it was tough to finish up before dark, but we made it – then had a great …

Last night was Boise’s 4th Hometown Throwdown and what a pleasant evening. The weather was sunny, but temps were only in the low 80’s, so even those of us on shore were comfortable. Again the Jr’s out numbered the adults. Thirteen competitors made three rides in the hole, and one scored downriver event. Our youngest competitor was 8 year old Hayden who completed some great eddy-line stern squirts

I really look forward to these Throwdowns because it helps us remember that paddling is fun and everyone really encourages each …

Boise’s 2nd Hometown Throwdown was again greeted by fantastic weather and plenty of water. Temps hit 82 by showtime and life was good. The river was sitting at 7440cfs and this presented a little problem with the entry into the third (and at this level, bottom) wave-hole that required a very determined approach and entry into the feature. At the end of 2 rounds everyone was pretty well thrashed and we moved to the down-river portion which everyone seems to really enjoy and this was highlighted by Tyler Allyn’s entry …
