The Reno River Festival Invitational was not nearly as long winded as the Open event yesterday. However, a few of the competitors from yesterday faired very well among the dominant freestylers in the sport. Erin Clancy, came out and placed in the top five after working her way through the Open event yesterday and then beating the majority of the invites today. Another mentionable, is Kevin “KB” Brown who was a competitor who made it to the invite last year and earned himself an auto-invite this year. He managed to …
The format for the men’s and women’s competition on Friday was a combined two heats to move on to the next round where the finals would be a knockout series. The Reno River Festival saw recors numbers not only in attendance but in number of boaters entering the competition. The competition was stiff throughout the 6 hour day of sun and heat. Below is video of the top rides from the men and women. It was encouraging to see more than the top dogs competing with the possibility of moving …
The 2009 Reno River Festival will covered top to bottom by World Kayak and Chris Wing (H20 Dreamin). The coverage begins Friday, May 8 with the Open competition and will continue on through the entire weekend with full coverage of the Pro event. This will be the FIRST ever ‘Almost Live’ coverage of a Freestyle event as our cameras will be feeding to a production suite and then on-line with about a 10 to 20 minute delay between heats. The final product will be most of the runs! We may …
Guess what. The sun was shinin’ again in Reno. Biiiiig surprise! After a well behaved evening of Reno frivolity (dinner at a cool Spanish place and blackjack with EJ) I was suprisingly well rested for the day. Day 3, the final day was boatercross. With the Truckee river set at a class II-III designation with lower water I was hard pressed to find a challenge for these athletes… er… it was obviously my first boatercross… aka … I had know idea that most of the …
Ohhhh baby, sun up we were on #5 and Colin was trying to teach me how to loop… er… I see the move in my head, just got to transfer it from the head, to the arms, paddle and body. Not so good at the loop my friends, even though the kiddies from Reno were poppin’ those suckers left right and center. So after almost getting the loop, I go up and spend a day watching folks do WAY more than just a loop. I’m of the …
Ok, Day 1 on the Truckee River in downtown Reno saw my first tour of the river from both a playboating and whitewater development stand point… this is an amazing class II river run with top of the line play spots… two standing out (#3 and #5), both are shallow holes with great retention. Both allowing playboaters all the moves holes can provide. Day 1 was the Open class competitions for JRs, Womens and Mens. The top 3 were allowed to move on to compete with the Pros in Day …
Day minus one in Reno… well, Nevada… cause today was not tooo much about Reno. It seems the town of Reno is ready for James. Got here at, like, 1:30 am EST… after an epic day of travel, too much rain in Chicago made the metal birds go boing. Luckily Bruce (said with a nice smile) hooked me up on an even better itinerary, on that got me into Reno a bit later, but one that didn’t involve flying all the way to the west coast, down the coast, then …
