USAFK Tour Stop: Buena Vista Pro-Am Rodeo

For four seasons and counting the Beuna Vista Pro-Am Rodeo has been the centerpiece of PaddleFest Weekend. The fifth USAFK Tour Stop for the 2011 series was slated to go off in the LoDo Wave at the BV Park, but with lower flows and a later melt in the Arkansas River Valley, the event was moved upstream to Downtown Hole. Pro Qualifiers for both Men and Women Pro classes took place on Friday, May 27th, with Junior Men/Women, Open Men, C1, OC1, and Pro Semis/Finals on Saturday, May 28th.

USAFK Tour Stop: Green River Expedition Freestyle

Green River is a warm, welcoming town in the high plains of southwestern Wyoming most well known as the launching site for John Wesley Powell’s expeditions of the Green River, Colorado River, and Grand Canyon. The Expedition Island Park, a National Historic Landmark, is also the site of a man made play feature and the fourth event of the USAFK Point Series. With the new feature in town, Green River was glad to open their doors and host the first Green River Expedition Freestyle. With high flows in the river, …

2010 Lord of the Fork Race Results

Write up by Jay:
The 2010 Lord of the Fork Race is in the books, with a new course this year, a record number of racers, and new men’s and women’s champions. The beautiful sunny weather must have convinced a lot of new people to show up for the race, including racers from New Zealand, Germany, and Canada. The new course started at Skunk Beach (below Fist), and ended at the usual spot below Climax.

The men’s champion came all the way from New Zealand and crushed the dreams of the local …

2009 US Team for Worlds Decided

A few surprises occurred in the US Team Trials Semi and Finals today.  Competition kicked off once again at 9:00 AM promptly, highly unlike kayakers.  The top 5 men, top 3 women, top 3 jr men, top 2 jr women, top 2 OC-1 were decided through an amazingly close competition and included some major upsets as well.

The strengths of the Potomac Festival are its overall inclusion of paddlers of all abilities as opposed to showcasing only the elite such as other big sponsor events. I am not saying those events do not have their place, I am only saying that events like the Potomac have theirs as well.

That’s right, I said it! I believe freestyle, especially the kind where you are taking timed runs in frigid water at elevation causing mild hypoxia is nothing more than a demonstration in controlled drowning! And I am convinced that many of todays competitors would quickly agree.

Reno – Day Minus One

Day minus one in Reno… well, Nevada… cause today was not tooo much about Reno. It seems the town of Reno is ready for James. Got here at, like, 1:30 am EST… after an epic day of travel, too much rain in Chicago made the metal birds go boing. Luckily Bruce (said with a nice smile) hooked me up on an even better itinerary, on that got me into Reno a bit later, but one that didn’t involve flying all the way to the west coast, down the coast, then …

Mission – What GOs in Reno, stays in Reno… letting Billy Harris live vicariously through me for a change!

OK,
With Chris Wing out due to his work schedule and such, looks like I’ve got a ball to pick up… covering the Reno Riuver Festival.  Many of you may not have remembered my first foree into event coverage.  I used to post as POLLO on Boatertalk and set up full coverage of the World’s (Ottawa, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Austria).  Funny that my Sort, Spain coverage web site still gets 10,000 visitors a month… weird… must be a log of retro boaters out there.  Well thanks to some well timed negotiations …

Watch Olympic Trials on NBC Sports 1 hour show!

NBC cameras were rolling today as they did some pre-race interviews. They asked me a lot of questions about things like, “how is it to compete with your daughter” and some Jackson Kayak questions, and , of course, as a former Olympian, how do you feel about this race. Well, it did get me thinking, and I am very excited to be here with my daughter competing in our first father/daughter Olympic Trials. I wish Dane was here too, but he didn’t qualify this time.
Meanwhile- the atmosphere is quite relaxed …

More from the NAWF

This is the 4th NAWF, and this year with high water, thanks to both rain and North Alabama mountain snowmelt! The organizers have done a great job in putting music to the river, bringing in lots of great sponsors and vendors, and plenty of kayaking, of course.
Yesterday was the Short Creek part of the event where a freestyle over a waterfall and a boatercross with 8 people at a time over the waterfall were the competitions. It is in Albertville, AL.
Results:
1. Andrew Holcomb won the waterfall freestyle
2. Nick Troutman was …

NAWF – Day 2 and closing

We all woke up Saturday morning to a dusting of snow and temperatures near 20 degrees which if your from the Midwest or Canada you shrug off as a warm early spring day. However, we are in North Alabama and most down here have only seen snow five or six times in their lives. So let me just say it was no surprise that they pushed back the 8:00 AM competitors meeting.
Competition eventually kicked off sometime around noon starting with juniors and following with men’s expert, women’s, and pro men …

Greetings from chilly Alabama. The first day of competition went off without a hitch and provided some entertainment as well. With the recent rain that the Southeast has been receiving, Short Creek was stomping today and provided us with some big tricks as well as quality beatings. Andrew Holcombe and Nick Troutman had strong showing today in the Men’s Pro Class.  Andrew was throwing split wheels off of the falls while Nick was continually attempting to throw Mcnasties and coming very close to executing one, though he …
