2016 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #2

The second event in the 2016 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was a new event format for us by racing up river.  We had a good turn out with 12 competitors joining in for some friendly attainment race competition with the Nolichucky Beer League!  We had a few spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the river bank.  The event was held in the Nolichucky River Gorge, TN on a nice mild evening with mostly cloudy skies.

The river level was around 950 CFS and spirits were high with many …

The second event in the 2014 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was big booming fun! 2014 Seaway Valley WK Throwdowns have started again :)

May 17th marked the beginning of a new WK Throwdown season in the Seaway Valley and the Riviere St-Charles in Valleyfield Quebec.
The weather forecast was poor and the overlap with the 1st Habs VS Rangers playoff game knocked off a lot of local participants but we still had a great time and the group that came to play was awesome. Given the 7 to 1 loss by the Habs folks should have come out on the water it would have been more rewarding. And the weather turned from …

Boise HomeTown ThrowDown #4

Here at Boise we’ve had our last Hometown Throwdown of the year. A big thank you to everyone thats helped make it such a fun year.
As usual our competition was on the second feature at the amazing Kelly’s Whitewater Park in Cascade, Idaho.
We had eleven competitors, two of which were all the way from Portland, Oregon.
Everyone had three rides, best two count, to show off their tricks. There were a few less ariels than before mostly because of the lower water that made the wave shallower than usual. There were …

2013 WorldKayak Pro-Am for First Descents at NOC!

So August 24th was the fourth paddling of the WorldKayak Pro-Am for First Descents and is it was the biggest and baddest yet!!! The event raised $3,795 for First Descents, a great organization committed to curing young adults of the emotional effects of cancer and empowering them to regain control of their lives by experiencing whitewater kayaking and other challenging adventure sports in a safe, fun and supportive environment. This year saw a change of venue to NOC and we couldn’t be happier or more excited working with all the …

Cascade had its second HomeTown ThrowDown this past Saturday. We had eleven participants that all competed in the second feature of Kelly’s Whitewater Park. The weather was in the high 80′s and the Payette North fork was a perfect temp.

Water levels are still above normal compared to last summer, which made the wave a little flushy, but nice and deep. Most of the tricks were loops and space godzillas. Wesley even did a few clean cartwheel paddle spin combos.

Three of our competitors were all the way from Bend, Oregon. And …

Idaho Hometown Throwdown #1 2013

Idaho’s first Hometown Throwdown of the year was finally on a warm sunny day and we had great flows at Kelly’s Whitewater Park. Temps in the mid 70′s and warmer water meant no poggies or skull-caps.
With these flows the second feature is great for loops, space godzillas, cartwheels, pretty much anything you can throw in a wave-hole. We ran three hole rides and had a couple of swims. Swims to me mean people are getting out of their comfort range and LEARNING! So kudos to those swimmers
We also …

Well, we had a downriver as planned. It started just above the Playground Rapid and finished at the Beginner’s Point just below the take out. A little hard in playboats, but regardless, paddling on this river will almost always happen in playboats.

Saturday was out last Throwdown for the year in Idaho. Weather in
Cascade was awesome with a bit of a breeze. But you could tell that
Fall is not far off.
I am so jazzed to see the kids from Kelly’s Kayak Academy continuing
to return and have Troy Wilson run a clinic for them prior to the
Throwdowns.  These kids are really excited about paddling.
Water was down to about 1400 cfs (from the normal 2200), so made it a
bit shallow but the more skilled paddlers could still throw ends and
loop. Water still feels good …

The final event in the 2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown Series closed in style!  We continued the trend of “the year of no rodeo” on th Noli, due to heavy rain earlier in the week leading up to the event.
However, like we have been doing all season, we made the best of it and had 12 competitors join in for some friendly downriver freestyle/slalom and boatercross competition!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on …

The third event in the 2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was kind of a shocker!  Just when we thought the river level for Big Rock was going to drop in for a good rodeo the day before, we awoke on event day to discover the river level was rising from rain overnight.  We have now coined this year’s Noli HTTD Series as “the year of no rodeo”!

The first event in the 2011 Nolichucky/Nantahala Hometown Throwdown series was a fun change in format and a great time for all!  Rock splats, rock spins, split wheels, splat wheels, wave wheels, eddy wheels, and macho moves abound in the throwdown!  We had 19 competitors join in for some friendly downriver freestyle/slalom competition!  We had 25-30 spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on the Lower Nolichucky River, TN.

The river level was around 1,200 CFS which made …

Chicago Throwdown Results

Anyone who doesn’t think midwest boaters are badass –doesn’t know sh!t (literally).

South bend had storms the few days before the throwdown, and any of you familiar with the area know what this can do to the water quality on the St. Joe river… Pair that with the 42deg air temperature yesterday, and you’d think no one would want to get in their boats. Far from it! We had 9 boaters in attendance for our very first throwdown, representing Indiana, Illinois and Ontario. Hell Yeah!

We …

Idaho Throwdown #1 2011

Last Friday we had our first  Idaho Hometown Throwdown of the year at the gutter. We had a good turn out for a chilly April evening, 10 competitors and a bunch of spectators  Alpenglow was nice enough to bring a gaggle of demo boats for whoever wanted to try them, including the new Rock Stars from Jackson kayak which drew lots of “Oooo’s and Ahhhh’s” from those that tried them out.
The wave wasn’t the best for aerial tricks, but a great front surf and spin wave. Mychal Hayes was the …

Reno HTTD #2 2011

Reno’s favorite son is back!!

With flows well above 2,000 cfs the Reno Park was rocking.  The holes on the main channel are big and #3 is a big wave hole which can be intimidating.  But on the south channel a nice little cartwheel hole starts to appear at these levels so that is where we had the HTTD.  Getting used to a new feature isn’t always easy but is great practice although there were still plenty of clean cartwheels, loops, and multiple barrel rolls.  The juniors put on a great …

March 27 Throwdown at Bangs Falls NS

It was the first event of the year and it was  chilly for the 30+ people that came top paddle! The snow is horizontal in some of the pictures below!  I was just trying to get everyone fired up with my dragon’s breath but almost ended up spraying the judge! Somehow ended up winning this time but there was some stiff competion and I probably won’t have the cold on my side for next time…
We also held paddling lessons so there were some firsts in a kayak, first times on …

Scudders Falls Hometown Throwdown #4 Results

The group lining up to start

We had a great day for the 4th Hometown Throwdown of the 2010 season: sunny and cool with beautiful fall colors. The water level was a bit challenging again as it was not as retentive as we would like and the rides were short. Eighteen competitors and numerous families and friends showed up. We were also missing the women: where were all the girls?

The results of the Men’s K1A and K1B classes:

Saturday October 2nd 2010.
Riviere St-Charles, Valleyfield, Quebec.
2010 has been an awesome year in the Seaway Valley. This year we decided to end the World Kayak series with something a bit. A Boatercross!
The weather did not do much for us but despite the cool temps  8 paddlers turned up to try the first ever boatercross in Valleyfield.
The site gets it’s water from 2 huge pipes them run under the road at the top of the river. This is a great place to Launch paddlers (2 at a …

2010 N.O.C. G.A.F. Hometown Throwdown Event Coverage

The N.O.C. CReW and World Kayak – Seaway Valley Hometown Throwdown – September Edition ☺

A warm sunny day on Saturday September 18th set the stage at the Riviere St-Charles in Valleyfield, Quebec for the September edition of the WK Seaway Valley Hometown Throwdown.
Every time we come out to do this event we are always asking ourselves how things will turn out. Today’s was no exception. When I arrived at the site in the morning with my family, the place was deserted….. So we got busy and set up for registrations and set up our judges area for the event. This was a new idea …

I’m excited to tell you that this year’s Camp Cup was an astounding success! Kristin and I departed Boise on Friday (July 16) after sending off our last student from our alumni program, “Plus,” and started the cross country drive to NC. Somewhere just outside Laramie, Wyoming, our beloved van decided it would go no further, leaving us with out transportation.
Fortunately, our broad network of supporters came in handy. Katie Hawkins, past Alzar instructor and current member of our Advisory Committee, lives in Denver (about 2.5 hours from where we …
