2016 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #2

The second event in the 2016 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was a new event format for us by racing up river.  We had a good turn out with 12 competitors joining in for some friendly attainment race competition with the Nolichucky Beer League!  We had a few spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the river bank.  The event was held in the Nolichucky River Gorge, TN on a nice mild evening with mostly cloudy skies.

The river level was around 950 CFS and spirits were high with many …

2014 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #2

The second event in the 2014 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was big booming fun! We had a good turn out with 16 competitors joining in for some friendly freestyle rodeo for the first time since June of 2011!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the river bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on the Lower Nolichucky River, TN with mostly sunny warm weather!

The river level was around 680 CFS; which is just starting to get retentive for play boating at Big Rock …

Boise HomeTown ThrowDown #4

Here at Boise we’ve had our last Hometown Throwdown of the year. A big thank you to everyone thats helped make it such a fun year.
As usual our competition was on the second feature at the amazing Kelly’s Whitewater Park in Cascade, Idaho.
We had eleven competitors, two of which were all the way from Portland, Oregon.
Everyone had three rides, best two count, to show off their tricks. There were a few less ariels than before mostly because of the lower water that made the wave shallower than usual. There were …

Cascade had its second HomeTown ThrowDown this past Saturday. We had eleven participants that all competed in the second feature of Kelly’s Whitewater Park. The weather was in the high 80′s and the Payette North fork was a perfect temp.

Water levels are still above normal compared to last summer, which made the wave a little flushy, but nice and deep. Most of the tricks were loops and space godzillas. Wesley even did a few clean cartwheel paddle spin combos.

Three of our competitors were all the way from Bend, Oregon. And …

2013 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #1

The first event in the 2013 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was full of fun! We had 15 competitors join in for some friendly downriver freestyle/slalom and boatercross competition!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank & the river right beach.  The event was held at Big Rock on the Lower Nolichucky River, TN with warm humid weather.
The river level was a healthy 2,200 CFS, which made the main Big Rock wave/hole feature a fast flushy wave train.  Since a rodeo competition …

Idaho Hometown Throwdown #1 2013

Idaho’s first Hometown Throwdown of the year was finally on a warm sunny day and we had great flows at Kelly’s Whitewater Park. Temps in the mid 70′s and warmer water meant no poggies or skull-caps.
With these flows the second feature is great for loops, space godzillas, cartwheels, pretty much anything you can throw in a wave-hole. We ran three hole rides and had a couple of swims. Swims to me mean people are getting out of their comfort range and LEARNING! So kudos to those swimmers
We also …

WK Slave River Throwdown #3

Well, we had a downriver as planned. It started just above the Playground Rapid and finished at the Beginner’s Point just below the take out. A little hard in playboats, but regardless, paddling on this river will almost always happen in playboats.
Our season is ending and the water is getting colder. The seven paddlers who braved the event decided to enter into one class: expert

Saturday was out last Throwdown for the year in Idaho. Weather in
Cascade was awesome with a bit of a breeze. But you could tell that
Fall is not far off.
I am so jazzed to see the kids from Kelly’s Kayak Academy continuing
to return and have Troy Wilson run a clinic for them prior to the
Throwdowns.  These kids are really excited about paddling.
Water was down to about 1400 cfs (from the normal 2200), so made it a
bit shallow but the more skilled paddlers could still throw ends and
loop. Water still feels good …

2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #4

The final event in the 2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown Series closed in style!  We continued the trend of “the year of no rodeo” on th Noli, due to heavy rain earlier in the week leading up to the event.
However, like we have been doing all season, we made the best of it and had 12 competitors join in for some friendly downriver freestyle/slalom and boatercross competition!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on …

Idaho is on Fire….and we were reminded of that during our 4th Hometown Throwdown as Long Valley filled with smoke so thick you could taste it. Fires near Horseshoe Bend, Stanley and Mountain Home have been burning for weeks and Idaho is second only to Colorado for fire activity this summer.

2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #3

The third event in the 2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was kind of a shocker!  Just when we thought the river level for Big Rock was going to drop in for a good rodeo the day before, we awoke on event day to discover the river level was rising from rain overnight.  We have now coined this year’s Noli HTTD Series as “the year of no rodeo”!

Who would’ve thought the second throw down of the year, two weeks later then the first, would have worse weather than the first? It snowed before the competition and there was sleet directly afterwards. The temperature was around 43 when the competition started, but the water was a bit warmer.

Our last throwdown broke the BWW (Bad Weather Wednesday) curse!  We had a great turn out an a little bit more water than we have had this season.  Charlie Albright was seen in a boat newer than an RPM, and it looked like he enjoyed it.  He also had the most unique vessel for the contest.  He managed to spin his way into 6th place in a tube!  That is some serious skill.  The ladies had another great showing and Gayle graced us with her boating prowess and took second …

Idaho Throwdown #5

Yet another awesome Throwdown for Idaho, but sadly, its the last one of the year. We had around hundred spectators for this event. The KWP wave was primo for smaller boats. It was shallower than the last few times, but it made up for it by being stickier. Our group consisted of more people from out of town than locals. Out of the nine of us, five were from Bend, Oregon. Guest Appreciation Festival Hometown Throwdown was HUGE FUN!  We had 36 competitors join in for some fun & friendly freestyle competition at the NOC Wave.  We had hundreds of spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from all sides on the river and on the old steel bridge below the feature.  We also had a really cool whitewater wakeboarding show going on beside the feature between heats that wowed the crowd.  This event turned out to be one of the biggest Freestyle events of the year in …

CReW and World Kayak – Seaway Valley Hometown Throwdown – September Edition ☺

A warm sunny day on Saturday September 18th set the stage at the Riviere St-Charles in Valleyfield, Quebec for the September edition of the WK Seaway Valley Hometown Throwdown.
Every time we come out to do this event we are always asking ourselves how things will turn out. Today’s was no exception. When I arrived at the site in the morning with my family, the place was deserted….. So we got busy and set up for registrations and set up our judges area for the event. This was a new idea …

The 2010 USNWC / WorldKayak Pro-AM was held on Saturday and was the final event for us this year in Charlotte.  The event went great providing an awesome opportunity for the weekend warrior boaters, the up and coming throwdown playas and raised money for First Descents all at the same time.  The event raised $1,100 for First Descents, a great organization committed to curing young adults of the emotional effects of cancer and empowering them to regain control of their lives by experiencing whitewater kayaking and other challenging adventure sports …

The midwest Freestyle Championships 2010

This past weekend I had the privilege to coach the Midwest Freestyle Championships for the third year in a row.  The weekend starts off with two days of clinics on Thursday and Friday.  It has been very gratifying as an instructor to watch a solid group of students come back for all three years and continue to improve.  We have managed to sell out the clinics for the past three years, and to me that is a sign of a community that loves boating and wants to continue to evolve …

2010 Pigeon Hometown Throwdown Event Coverage

7/31/10

The morning was a lightly rainy, damp start.  Registration was held at the Pigeon River Gorge put-in just down from the power house.  We had a total of 14 racers for the first Annual Pigeon River Boater Cross race.  With the “Run what you brung” Rule we had 13 short boats and one river runner.  The race started from the river right eddy next to the powerhouse all the way down to the bridge.  The mass start event caused cheers to come from the masses who were loading into rafts …

Slave River Throwdown #2

Local boaters from Fort Smith and the local paddling club combined efforts with Paddle Performance to host the second of four Throwdowns at the Playground Rapid of the Slave River. Hosted this past Friday evening, we had the advanced hole ride followed by a beginner surf off and run through the rapid. After the event everyone joined in for a body surf in the hole and a BBQ on the beach. Welcome to paddling in northern Canada…warm water, big waves, sandy beaches and lots of friends!

Idaho Hometown Throwdown #6

We had a beautiful night for Idaho Throwdown #6 at Kelly’s Whitewater Park. The water is so warm now as it pores off the top of the dam about 1/2 mile upstream. We ran the event at feature #2 – top wave on the far side of the island. We had 12 show up and 5 were first timers to a throwdown.
It’s great to watch progress at each of these events. Willard has been in 3 or 4 throwdowns this year and he scored more points on his first ride …

Slave Paddle Fest

We hosted our 1st of 4 Throwdowns this season in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories along side the 3rd annual Slave Paddle Fest.  This event was not only a huge success in terms of its organization, but also with respect to the number of people and different user groups it brought out to the mighty Slave River.
There were 173 paddlers that participated in the weekend.  These numbers were split with the Friday Flotilla and War Canoe Race, the World Kayak Throwdown and the kayak …

2010 Tri-Cities Hometown Throwdown Event #3

The third event in the 2010 Tri-Cities Hometown Throwdown series was BIG BOOMING FUN!  We had 28 competitors join in for some great freestyle competition on the NOC Wave.  Due to the low river level on the Nolichucky, we had to make a last minute venue change to a feature that had a descent river level with a good play spot.  The good folks at the Nantahala Outdoor Center were kind enough to let us host the event on the NOC Wave adjacent to their campus.  The NOC Wave feature …

Sunday July 25th 2010. Riviere St-Charles, Valleyfield, Quebec.
11 paddlers and awesome weather and warm whitewater is a recipe for a couple hours of FUN.
We had a good turnout. 13 people registered and a few dropped out for various reasons. Nerves, dates and so on.
This time around we decided to be a bit more picky for the scoring and the judges were advised accordingly. This added a bit of stress to the paddlers but they all smiled and gave it their best
We were joined by 2 new Juniors. …

Idaho Hometown Throwdowns for 6/24 and 6/26. With cancellations for high water we ended up with 2 Throwdowns in 3 days. Thursday evening we had a TD at the Gutter in Horseshoe Bend. The eddy was tough and everyone was tired at the end of the night.
Big thanks to Sean Bierle of Alzar School for helping score the variety on this night. Mike Voorhees hit cartwheels, split-wheels and backstabs. Tyler and Willard both had a split-wheel as well.
The youth had tons of energy, but were the tough eddy access as …

2010 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown Event #2

The second event in the 2010 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was another fun time for all in attendance!  We had 24 competitors join in for some friendly spirited freestyle competition.  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on the Lower Nolichucky River.  The river level was around 920 CFS which made for a fast & flushy play level at the Big Rock feature.  The weather for the day was hot & humid with partly …

It’s hot in Washington, DC. Real hot. Seven out of the last 10 days, the temperature has been 95 degrees and higher. And since DC is built on a swamp, the humidity is high too–so sweat just sits on your skin.
Luckily the Potomac River flows through DC, and luckily we know how to kayak. So at least we can get wet and play in the water.
Last Thursday we gathered for the June edition of the MD Chute Out Freestyle series, part of the Hometown Throwdown series from World Kayak. Once …
