USAFK Tour Stop: Buena Vista Pro-Am Rodeo

For four seasons and counting the Beuna Vista Pro-Am Rodeo has been the centerpiece of PaddleFest Weekend. The fifth USAFK Tour Stop for the 2011 series was slated to go off in the LoDo Wave at the BV Park, but with lower flows and a later melt in the Arkansas River Valley, the event was moved upstream to Downtown Hole. Pro Qualifiers for both Men and Women Pro classes took place on Friday, May 27th, with Junior Men/Women, Open Men, C1, OC1, and Pro Semis/Finals on Saturday, May 28th.

USAFK Tour Stop: Green River Expedition Freestyle

Green River is a warm, welcoming town in the high plains of southwestern Wyoming most well known as the launching site for John Wesley Powell’s expeditions of the Green River, Colorado River, and Grand Canyon. The Expedition Island Park, a National Historic Landmark, is also the site of a man made play feature and the fourth event of the USAFK Point Series. With the new feature in town, Green River was glad to open their doors and host the first Green River Expedition Freestyle. With high flows in the river, …

The 2nd annual Watauga River Gorge Race went down this past Saturday (4-9-11) organized by Eric Chance.  The event was a total grassroots paddling community gathering with no prizes or trophies; ALL FOR GLORY!  It was a big boofing good time and full of NASCAR style “rubbin’ is racing” action!!  The water level was is nice 260ish CFS flow and the weather was nice with partly cloudy skies and temps in the 70’s.  38 racers participated in the mass start downriver race!!

The race started at the put-in for the gorge …

The midwest Freestyle Championships 2010

This past weekend I had the privilege to coach the Midwest Freestyle Championships for the third year in a row.  The weekend starts off with two days of clinics on Thursday and Friday.  It has been very gratifying as an instructor to watch a solid group of students come back for all three years and continue to improve.  We have managed to sell out the clinics for the past three years, and to me that is a sign of a community that loves boating and wants to continue to evolve …

Crowds surge, stakes rise as US Freestyle Kayak Team trials moves toward finals
Missoula, MT – It was a day of high anxiety as competitors battled on Brennan’s Wave on the Clark Fork River to try to make the final rounds of the US National Freestyle Kayak Team Trials. At the end of the day, a total of 21 men, women and juniors will earn the right to represent the United States at the International Canoe Federation Freestyle Kayak World Championships in Platting, Germany next summer.
As the field dwindled today, the …

Check ya later… TEVA makes huge cut

The preliminaries for the Pro Freestyle kicked off today around 1:00 PM with 44 competitors in the men class and 16 women.  As with most preliminary competitions the majority of the rides were conservative where competitors were given 2 rides with their points from both combine to determine who moved on.  The top 15 of the men and 10 of the women were honored to move on to the semi’s tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM, where WKTV will resume coverage.
I personally like to compare this competition to a test in …

Hungry for Homestake?

Unlike the last couple of weeks, the skies were blue and cloudless… that was until predictably the rain clouds organized around 2:30.  Fortunately the race was over at that point, so competitors were treated to 70 deg temperatures and sunny skies whereas last year it was raining and sleeting.
Last year was one of the most entertaining in regards to carnage, the lines today were for the most part smooth and uneventful.  The level was around 115 cfs for the event and manky as usual.  I figure if this is any …

2009 US Team for Worlds Decided

A few surprises occurred in the US Team Trials Semi and Finals today.  Competition kicked off once again at 9:00 AM promptly, highly unlike kayakers.  The top 5 men, top 3 women, top 3 jr men, top 2 jr women, top 2 OC-1 were decided through an amazingly close competition and included some major upsets as well.
The wave continued to be an extremely challenging feature to deal with as at times the wave would green out and flush the competitors off of the wave, however that did not keep all …

Success!! All Systems Go on Liftoff, launch of WKTV

I just checked Boatertalk and I believe the lack of comments deems it a success, The one comment of the nice video was very nice as well.  We kicked of the official launch of World Kayak TV today during the preliminary round of the US Team Trials.
World Kayak brought in a total of 8300 viewers throughout the day, which in the kayaking community is unheard of.  World Kayak is truly bringing the competition home to the viewers, its original intent.  We will continue to bring live coverage the remainder of …

NOC Shootout Final Results

I just returned to Charlotte from rainy Western NC from this weekends NOC/Dagger Shootout.  It was a great display of what this area can offer as an event venue and the overall response from both competitors and spectators was positive with some constructive feedback.  Let’s just say that rodeo is back in Western North Carolina!  Below are a few photos and the full results from the weekend.  The video will be posted once I receive my camera back from WNC where I thoughtfully left it in a cozy spot this …

Southeast Event Sets a Precedence

Yesterday morning started with a bit of apprehension, apprehension that any organizer would have with their first major event. Daniel Dutton informed me that around 8:00 AM that there were only 16 competitors registered for the event, but that he was anticipating at least ten more. Not so surprising to me, the event ended up with nearly 50 competitors, extremely respectable for a first-time event and extremely well organized. The scoring format that was used catered to both the beginners and the pros alike and allowing everyone …

Freestylin Chute Out Style

The strengths of the Potomac Festival are its overall inclusion of paddlers of all abilities as opposed to showcasing only the elite such as other big sponsor events. I am not saying those events do not have their place, I am only saying that events like the Potomac have theirs as well.
Yesterday’s freestyle event had beginners and intermediates outnumbering experts by a large margin and it could have not been more appropriate as this venue has played host to the “Maryland Chute Out” for many years. For those …

D.C. Brings the Heat

Temperatures hovered in the mid 90’s with high humidity in classic D.C. fashion. However, the mid-atlantic region wasn’t the only thing bringing the heat as Jason Beakes, Jeff Calhoun and Danny Stock, local residents, scorched the course during the 2008 Potomac Festival and Great Falls Race.
Water levels sprung up from rains earlier this week bringing the Potomac somewhere in the range of 3.5 feet come race time making the center lines the course of choice for race officials. Such rapids as “Grace Under Pressure” and the “Streamers” were being …

North American Champion?

Nick Troutman wants to be the U.S. National Champion. There is only one problem with that; he’s not from the United States. However he is currently holding the second position in the Blue Paddle FIBArk Freestyle that is doubling as the U.S. National Championships.
After Day 1 of freestyle action we narrowed the Men’s field of competitors from 60 competitors down to 30, a huge cut. The Women’s and C-1 did not field enough competitors so they automatically advance on to tomorrow. The Men’s competitors consisted of …

FIBArk – The Hungry Hippo Hole

There must be something about extreme racing and inclement weather, because today during the Pine Creek Boater X it was no different. The temperature dipped down into the lower 40’s with wind gusts of 50-60 mph and snowflakes were seen briefly at times. At one point during the race a deer was spotted by spectators looking down from the mountaintop almost as if to say “what the hell are you doing?”
Once again Colorado high water was omnipresent and the spectators were hungry for some carnage, and what they …

The 8-Ball Race takes place today which should prove to be absolutely entertaining as a normal boater-x will be taken to the next level. Imagine American Gladiators on the water. Hobie promised that this year will live up to its reputation from years past! Keep your eyes peeled for more coverage of todays events and here is some eye candy from yesterdays events.

Not much more to say other than Dustin Urban is bomber under pressure. Facing a score of 158 that EJ put up in his second ride, Dustin had one more ride to go. After splashing a bit of water in his face and looking over to his wife Katie he road into the hole and absolutely blew Vail, CO up! He hit just about every trick that is possible scoring an astounding 178 points besting EJ’s by 20 points. This put the pressure on the old …

I sat next to Andrew Holcombe this morning after the conclusion of the Downriver Sprint on Gore Creek not realizing he had just finished. He looked surprisingly fresh and dry considering he just sprinted 3 miles downstream through class II-III. “It’s 20 minutes of absolute pain,” Holcombe said. “I will be just happy to place, especially with racers like Jeff Calhoun who specialize in downriver racing.” Holcombe as well as a number of professional and amateur racers participated in this mornings Gore Creek Kayak Sprint on …

Demonstrations in Controlled Drowning-Day 1

That’s right, I said it! I believe freestyle, especially the kind where you are taking timed runs in frigid water at elevation causing mild hypoxia is nothing more than a demonstration in controlled drowning! And I am convinced that many of todays competitors would quickly agree.
After a brutal day of weather yesterday during the Homestake Creek Race, competitors were treated to fair skies and temperatures extending into the upper 70’s. Quite a contrast, but nonetheless welcomed. Today marked the start to TEVA’s major events, including the Rodeo Qualifier. Roughly 70 …

Homestake Creek Race – Great lines, Better Carnage

The Homestake Creek Race takes place on the class V Homestake Creek in Red Cliff Colorado. This race had its humble beginnings when Ken “Hobie” Hoeve, Dagger Product Manager, decided to have a race on one of his back yard creeks. The incentive to bring boaters out and participate, a keg of beer. This race brings in some of the top creek boaters in the nation and dishes out its fair share of beatdowns. The beer is still waiting for those at the end of the race.
This year Vail Resorts …

Ice Cream Headaches and Thin Air

I arrived in Vail yesterday, June 2, in the later afternoon after making the drive west for two days. The little 88′ Toyota truck has served me well once again forever proving that they are the greatest vehicles ever made! Being road weary and ready to stretch out a bit and get some much needed exercise, I walked down to the Inertantional Bridge in Vail where the freestyle will be held. There i was greeted with many familiar faces and friends who I have not seen in nearly a month, …

Reno Day 2 – Pro class comps

Ohhhh baby, sun up we were on #5 and Colin was trying to teach me how to loop… er… I see the move in my head, just got to transfer it from the head, to the arms, paddle and body. Not so good at the loop my friends, even though the kiddies from Reno were poppin’ those suckers left right and center. So after almost getting the loop, I go up and spend a day watching folks do WAY more than just a loop. I’m of the …

More from the NAWF

This is the 4th NAWF, and this year with high water, thanks to both rain and North Alabama mountain snowmelt! The organizers have done a great job in putting music to the river, bringing in lots of great sponsors and vendors, and plenty of kayaking, of course.
Yesterday was the Short Creek part of the event where a freestyle over a waterfall and a boatercross with 8 people at a time over the waterfall were the competitions. It is in Albertville, AL.
Results:
1. Andrew Holcomb won the waterfall freestyle
2. Nick Troutman was …
