2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #4

The final event in the 2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown Series closed in style!  We continued the trend of “the year of no rodeo” on th Noli, due to heavy rain earlier in the week leading up to the event.
However, like we have been doing all season, we made the best of it and had 12 competitors join in for some friendly downriver freestyle/slalom and boatercross competition!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on …

Idaho is on Fire….and we were reminded of that during our 4th Hometown Throwdown as Long Valley filled with smoke so thick you could taste it. Fires near Horseshoe Bend, Stanley and Mountain Home have been burning for weeks and Idaho is second only to Colorado for fire activity this summer.
However we had a great time and the 90* weather made the water all the better.
We had 6 kids return from Kellys Kayak Academy Devon Barker-Hicks has been teaching. Great to see them show up and show continued interest in …

Sorry for the late writeup but I’ve been replacing my roof that blew off in a storm
Yeah – our first Hometown Throwdown of the year that it didn’t snow or ‘snain’ on us! Plenty of water, weather in the 90s, and pumped-up paddlers made for a super fun day.
We were honored to team up with the Kelly’s Kayak Academy (KKA) for their graduation from week long clinics at KWP with Devon Barker-Hicks, Brent LaFay and Troy Wilson. KWP offers free (yes FREE) kayak lessons to Valley County kids …

2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #3

The third event in the 2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was kind of a shocker!  Just when we thought the river level for Big Rock was going to drop in for a good rodeo the day before, we awoke on event day to discover the river level was rising from rain overnight.  We have now coined this year’s Noli HTTD Series as “the year of no rodeo”!

However, we made the best of it and had 16 competitors join in for some friendly downriver freestyle/slalom and boatercross competition!  We had several …

Industrial Wave-HTTD #2 West Kootenays, BC

The second HTTD to hit the koots came after wrapping up the highest water Kootenay Whitewater Festival in history on Sunday evening.  The competitors were soggy after surviving the rainy flood level festival and it seemed like the World Kayak HTTD would produce a weak turnout.  Lucky for us the sun found it’s way through the clouds and the record high water produced a surf wave in Trail that blew everyone out of the water, some literally.

Industrial hole was in last season for the first time in over 12 years …

2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #2

The second event in the 2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was full of good times! We had 10 competitors join in for some friendly freestyle and boatercross competition!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on the Lower Nolichucky River, TN with warm sunny weather.
The river level was 1,070CFSwhich made the main Big Rock wave/hole feature flushy, but the participants wanted to rodeo.  So we agreed to the one and done flip & flush …

CKS Paddlefest

Despite low water levels, athletes and fans alike rallied this year to create one of the most successful PaddleFest’s and best  BV Pro-Am Kayaking competitions to date. So many thanks to all the incredible volunteers and spectators who showed up to cheer, enjoy the beer gardens and support an amazing event.
Extra special thanks to Jackson Kayak for being the premiere sponsor, and donating a kayak  of choice to the overall points winner in the amateur division. We couldn’t have done it without you!
We are already looking forward to having the …

Who would’ve thought the second throw down of the year, two weeks later then the first, would have worse weather than the first? It snowed before the competition and there was sleet directly afterwards. The temperature was around 43 when the competition started, but the water was a bit warmer.
Eight boaters braved the snow and sleet, two of which were from Stanley.  For such a cold day, everyone really put on a show.
KWP offered a solid feature once again and the hot dogs definitely hit the spot.

On Saturday, the North …

The first boatercross of season started with a bang. With 39 kayakers, it was Charlotte’s largest kayak race to date. The contestants competed in a head to head to head to head race with a few special obstacles. Each racer had to start with dizzy paddle (turn in a cirle around their paddle) before they got into their boats. Then they raced down the course touching the six flags as they battled their way down the course. If a racer was lucky enough to catch …

The first Boise Throwdown was held yesterday at Kelly’s Whitewater Park. On the way down we thought it would be amazing if even six people showed up on a cloudy forty five degree day, but we were pleasantly surprised to have fifteen competitors, including two from Washington and four from Sun Valley. Everyone was tough and got in the water, even though it looked like it would rain. It never rained and actually turned out to be a nicer day than I’d thought.
As for the wave, it was a great …

Atlanta Hometown Throwdown Event #3 – Freestyle Competition
June 3 @ 1:30 PM
Feature: Surfer’s Rapid on the Cartecay River
It is our second year of HTTD and we always have to include a freestyle competition. SO here it is. Come out and join us for a friendly freestyle competition on the Cartecay River. Judging will be done by your fellow competitors and friends, and points will be awarded for everything from spins to unintentional rolls i.e. window shading. This is an easy feature with a great recovery pool. We had first time boaters out …

Slocan River BoaterCross HTTD#1

With three divisions, Long Boat, Expert, and intermediate paddlers had ample categories to showcase their skills.  We even had a R-2 Raft team that placed third in the longboat group.  Sven P grabbed the first spot in the expert category placing first in all heats while the intermediate group was a neck to neck match with loving couple Ian and Heather battling it out.  The long boat group was won narrowly by Endless Adventure young ripper, Sam the Hammer.

After the event the group met at Whisper’s Take out for some …

Reno HTTD #4

Our last throwdown broke the BWW (Bad Weather Wednesday) curse!  We had a great turn out an a little bit more water than we have had this season.  Charlie Albright was seen in a boat newer than an RPM, and it looked like he enjoyed it.  He also had the most unique vessel for the contest.  He managed to spin his way into 6th place in a tube!  That is some serious skill.  The ladies had another great showing and Gayle graced us with her boating prowess and took second …

Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #1

The first event in the 2012 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was full of fun! We had 13 competitors join in for some friendly downriver freestyle/slalom and boatercross competition!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on the Lower Nolichucky River, TN with mild overcast weather.

The river level was 1,470 CFS which made the main Big Rock wave/hole feature too flushy for our typical rodeo format.  So we agreed to a slalom course through the …
