The third event in the 2011 Nolichucky/Nantahala Hometown Throwdown series was HUGE in size and fun!! We had a total of 61 competitors join together for a big booming freestyle rodeo on the Nantahala River, NC!!! This event had the most participation of any whitewater freestyle event to date this year in the USA! Nanty HTTD event #3 now holds the record for the most participation of any HTTD event that has ever been recorded in our 4 years of World Kayak hosting these events! We also set a record …
We had another Throwdown up at KWP last Saturday. We had thirteen competitors, three new to throwdowns. The high water changed the waves a bit so the second feature wasn’t too sticky but nice and deep for loops and cartwheels. The top wave was super sticky and big, so we opted for the second feature. Having the bridge to the island sure was convenient and even allowed for spectators to come over to watch. After two hole rides we held a boatercross again. The boatercross seems to be …

We had 32 competitors join in for some fun freestyle competition! We also had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank. The river level was around 800 CFS which made the Big Rock wave/hole feature nice and fluffy for big air! The weather for the afternoon was sunny skies and warm temps.

My trip to Germany for the 2011 World Freestyle Championships started at 3am when Hope, my beautiful wife, was kind enough to drive me to the airport. Needless to say at that time of the morning I was less than animated. I got to the check in counter earlier than the airline workers so that I could make sure getting my boat on the plane was as easy as possible. Other than the huge fee to fly a boat all went well. I am always amazed that everyone does not …

Sunday, brought the crowd friendly event of boatercross. 4 boaters racing head to head working as hard as they can to advance to the next round. How can we make that a bit more rough and exciting for the crowd? That’s right, you put a mandatory upstream gate in the course! Not only do all the boaters have to go through it traveling upstream, but if any one is behind it gives them a chance to get back in the mix and to “interact” with the other racers. I must …

We finally beat the bad weather Wednesday curse! No wind, sun, and warm temps. We could get used to the weather we are supposed to have in Reno. This weeks crowd was augmented greatly by the traveling circus known as the freestyle tour. It was great to see so many folks come into town specifically to boat. The high water brought #3 up to a great wave level. There were a bunch of great rides that we very high scoring, and there was a big group of folks fully embracing the fun spirit …
