Scotian Chute Out #3 needs more snow!

The third Throwdown was our first event with no snow ,but the levels are dropping so maybe we could use a little more…. however the sun came out and Nova Scotian paddlers were putting on sunscreen for the first time and enjoying much warmer water temperatures. We had several boaters out to their first competition and some on the river for their first time for the lessons in the afternoon. Several people had to peel of a layers as it got much warmer as the day went on which was great for a change!

We had a new sponsor in the Greenfield General Store that supplied a lunch of free hotdogs to everyone at the event which complimented the great prizes from Immersion Research, Jackson Kayak, Mion footwear, and Smith Optics.

Unfortunately the flu took it’s toll on some of our paddlers, so get well soon to all those at home in bed and get rest up for our next Throwdown on Saturday June 7

Scotian Chute Out #2 gets more snow!

It snowed again the night before our second Chute Out and I wondered whether it was better to brings my skis to the river instead of my new All Star. Fortunately the winds changed overnight and by 11am it was about 20 degrees celcius warmer than our first event and the atmosphere was even more fun! The water level of the Medway River was at 1′ on the bridge guage and Fisher’s Hole was the spot to throwdown for almost 30 people from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. We had people that had never been in a hole before smiling and sharing the eddy with veteran kayakers like Harry Cox our local legend. Several people in shiny new boats with big smiles that helped warm the freshly melted snow. We watched our youngest competitor Umeko, who still has the prettiest boat on the river, squeek out a couple of extra points to beat her mom again and get well on her way to beating her dad! But to be fair I must say that her Dad wore himself out safety boating for guys like Rob who probably wants to practice his combat roll a bit more and lose the title of ‘Iron Lung’.
The afternoon had lessons for all levels in both playboating and river running that went late enough that we ended up having dinner around 9:30pm. It was a great day and I’m looking forward to the next one this May 3.

March 1 Scotian Chute Out Results

Thanks to everyone who braved the nasty storm and helped make it such a fun event for our first WK Throwdown! It is definitely harder to paddle with ice pellets in your face! Big thanks Harold Cox coming all the way from New Brunswick for his first paddle after heart surgery and especially the young keeners that stuck around for lessons in the worst of the storm in the afternoon while allowing the ’soft’ veterans to compete in milder weather in the morning.
I promise the weather will be better for the next throwdown this April 5

Nova Scotia throws down the gauntlet! -11C, snow and freezing rain, and a great turnout for WK’s first Hometown Throwdown

It was well below freezing, the snow was heavy, the freezing rain knocked out the power… but Mark Richard and the gang in Nova Scotia pulled off the first ever World Kayak Hometown Throwdown this Saturday. The gauntlet is tossed… if they can do it in these conditions and get an above average participation level, all can! The next stop will be Reno on the 12th of March.
