Throwing down on the Gauley!

By colin • Sep 28th, 2009 • Category: Uncategorized

Another Gauley festival has come and gone and WK has added two new events to the weekend.  This year we added a rolling Hometown Throwdown on the Lower Gauley.  Competitors took rides at both Canyon Doors hole as well as the big wave at Lower Mash.  Everyone got three rides at Canyon Doors and two [...]

Midwest Freestyle Championships

By colin • Aug 24th, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, Festival Coverage

This year I was fortunate enough to be invited back to Wausau to coach the Midwest Freestyle Championships for the second year in a row.  Needless to say it was great to see a bunch of familiar faces.  This year’s trip had a few new twists to it that added a bunch to the experience.  [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #7 09′

By colin • Jun 11th, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Another season of the Reno hometown throwdowns has come to a close.  We capped the season off last evening with a slalom survivor and a boatercross.  This was our second slalom survivor of the season and the course had a few new twists to it.  There was a mandatory back ferry across the second feature [...]

GCR #3 09′

By colin • Jun 8th, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Special thanks again to the GCRS – 2009 partners in the kayaking and local communities. Their support, along with many others, allowed our competitors and spectators to enjoy the battles in the rodeo hole for the third Wednesday in a row. It was a battle of wills against the hole that just didn’t want to [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #6 09′

By colin • Jun 2nd, 2009 • Category: WK Hometown Throwdowns

Last Wednesday we had some less than stellar weather and that unfortunately kept some boaters away.  For those who did show up we had a “entertain the judges” scoring system.  We were giving bonus points for tagging tubers with your bow while they were floating in the eddy.  We saw tandem surfs with sabotage as [...]

Golden Community Rodeo #2 09′

By colin • Jun 2nd, 2009 • Category: WK Hometown Throwdowns

With the Colorado skies finally releasing us from the grasp of 5 days of rain and thunderstorms, we couldn’t have had better timing for night two of the Golden Community Kayak Rodeo Series – 2009. Competition was fierce as many vied for the overall prize, giving them a chance to win a kayak and carbon [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #5 09′

By colin • May 26th, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, Throwdown Results, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Our fifth throwdown of the year was a nice decompression after a weekend full of Reno River Festival craziness!  A bunch of the same faces that were competing in the open event at the river festival were back to their roots throwing their paddles in the air for style and a bunch of other super sweet moves.  [...]

Golden Community Rodeo #1 09′

By colin • May 22nd, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

http://www.eddyflower.com/RodeoSeriesStandings.aspx?EventId=86
—————-
Night one of the 2009 Golden Community Kayak Rodeo Series finished with record spectator attendance. Usually, on the first night, fewer eyes witness the antics of some of the best playboaters in the state. With record temperatures of 89 degrees and accompanying higher water, the spray was flying through the air along with the schwag [...]

Hometown Throwdowns go big time!

By colin • May 1st, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, Festival Coverage, Throwdown Results, WK Hometown Throwdowns

World Kayak is happy to announce that the open at this year’s Reno River Festival will be a Hometown Throwdown (HTTD).  The open event will be held on Friday May 8th.  The event will be conducted and scored like all other HTTD’s.  The top three paddlers from the K1-A, K1-W, and K1-JR will be carried [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #3 09′

By colin • Apr 30th, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, Throwdown Results, WK Hometown Throwdowns

The weather was better than the second throwdown but not as good as the first.  Go figure, spring in the Sierra.  We did have the great honor of having the lowest water level possible.  Even with the low water we had a great turnout.  For the first time the K-1A category was bigger than the [...]

Ledyard Festival Version 2.0

By colin • Apr 28th, 2009 • Category: Festival Coverage, Uncategorized, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Organizing events is hard.  Producing a first year festival (and actually getting people to attend) is even harder.  Dartmouth’s Ledyard Canoe Club came through with a truly worthy addition to the northeast paddling scene.  The first ever Ledyard River Festival was definitely worth the trip for all those who came to enjoy the festivities.

If someone [...]

The First Annual Ledyard River Festival

By colin • Apr 28th, 2009 • Category: Uncategorized

The First Annual Ledyard River Festival was a great success with over 200 people participating at the festival this past weekend. The Wells River Rumble, formerly organized by Jolyon Rivoir-Pruszinski, now run by Dartmouth College’s Ledyard Canoe Club, saw the highest number of racers ever as 30 competitors paddled in the mass-start and stage races [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #2 09′

By colin • Apr 17th, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Our second Throwdown in Reno was cold!  Actually it was cold and windy.  It was still snowing at my house when I left to drive down to the park.  The cold weather had also dropped the river level a bit, but we made the best of what we had.  Instead of a normal throwdown Toby [...]

Richmond Hometown Throwdown #1 09′

By colin • Apr 17th, 2009 • Category: WK Hometown Throwdowns

Awesome turnout for the first event of 2009. The weather was chilly and we had a bit of rain, but that did not deter the Richmond boaters from showing up in masses.
We had a total of 25 racers, which proves to me that Richmond is an awesome place to paddle. I big thanks goes out [...]

SGS Wrap UP

By colin • Apr 17th, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

The curtain closed on the first annual SGS the end of March with 8 teams holding their heads high. The persistent drought that has plagued the southeast was indeed a factor but ELFing rivers aside our teams were capable of logging some serious gradient in the pursuit of bragging rites.

The weeks were highlighted with teams logging down laps on the Cheoah, some went [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #1

By colin • Apr 2nd, 2009 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Here we are again at the start of another Throwdown season and we got super lucky with the weather!  It is now the day after and another winter storm is bearing down on the Sierra and the temperature is dropping.  So, let’s get back to the event and the news that you actually want to [...]

Midwest Freestyle Championships

By colin • Aug 22nd, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Pro Event Coverage

The Midwest Freestyle Championships were last weekend in Wausau Wisconsin. I was there to coach some freestyle clinics and to soak up the Midwest boating scene. Let me tell you they can get things done in Wausau. Not only was the event a great time and a huge success, but the off water events were [...]

Missoula Hometown Throwdown #4

By colin • Aug 7th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Thursday Night Throwdowns 2008Summary: By KB
The second annual Thursday Night Throw-down series (T.N.T.) was a success story again in 2008. First off- HUGE thanks to every person who helped in making this event go off! T.N.T. is a local throw-down freestyle kayak event, so there is no money being made, therefore no money too pay [...]

Missoula Hometown Throwdown #1

By colin • Jul 17th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Last Thursday was the 1st out of 4 Throwdowns, during the month of July in Missoula Montana.  This event was off the hook once again in 08’.  Water levels were insanely good for July.  The wave was in prime shape for throwing every trick imaginable.  The turn out was great in both athlete and spectator [...]

Colorado Hometown Throwdown Wrap Up

By colin • Jul 10th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

The Golden Community Kayak Rodeo Series was a smashing success. In 2008,
we put the ‘unity’ in the ‘Community’ of kayaking and local businesses.
With a huge spectator turn out and an increase in community businesses
partnering with us, we expect an even bigger and better series next
year. Watch the video from the Denver Post here and see [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #5

By colin • Jul 10th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Last night was the last event of the 08’ Reno Hometown Throwdown series. I had hoped to host a Slalom Survivor event, but that was not to be. Olympian Joe Jacobi introduced me to his Slalom Survivor event last year at the Whitewater Symposium and I had a blast! Look for these great events mixed [...]

GCR/Hometown Throwdown Colorado #3

By colin • Jun 20th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

World Kayak is one of the major sponsors of the Golden Community Rodeo. The Golden Community Rodeo is a grass-roots effort that brings together whitewater enthusiasts, local residents and businesses, and industry representatives to participate in this community event. The GCR is well organized, managed, and run exclusively by local volunteers whose common characteristic is [...]

Richmond Hometown Throwdown #2

By colin • Jun 10th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, Uncategorized, WK Hometown Throwdowns

The 2nd Richmond Hometown Throw down was a boatercross race at pipeline rapid.  10 competitors competed, navigating their way down pipeline rapid and manuevering through 4 gates.  We had pretty much a hodge podge of boats so the class where pretty open.  Good times.
Results:
Heat 1:  1st – Josh Evans (playboat) Dagger Rx, 2nd – Brad Polack [...]

Hometown Throwdown Colorado Style

By colin • Jun 10th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Wow what a great event we enjoyed for the second night of the four night Golden Community Kayak Rodeo! http://www.eddyflower.com/gcr We had a great turnout Wednesday despite not having perfect Colorado weather. It’s obvious that kayak fans and competitors will not be deterred, especially when we had 5 tents to hide under during the brief [...]

Upper Valley Hometown Throwdown #1

By colin • Jun 2nd, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Memorial day weekend was certainly one to remember for the competitors, spectators and volunteers at the first Hometown Throwdown Upper Valley Freeestyle event. I was worried that
attendance might not be great for this event, due to the fact that it was scheduled for a holiday weekend. I also know that Eric Jackson is famous for [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #3

By colin • May 19th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Another month has come and gone, and with it the Reno River Festival and the third Reno Hometown Throwdown.  It was great to see all of the usual faces out there and a few new ones as well.  It was cool to see Toby pull Bill Erlach aside and replace his RPM with a shiny [...]

Reno Hometown Throwdown #2

By colin • Apr 11th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

Once again I was impressed by my new hometown of Reno, NV!!  We had worse weather than our first event, the water level dropped 24 hours prior to go time, and we still had more people show up and compete than last month!!  I cannot wait to see what will happen when we get a [...]

Reno Throwdown #1

By colin • Mar 13th, 2008 • Category: Feature Story, WK Hometown Throwdowns

 Reno Throwdown #1
Canada may get things done in the cold at their first throwdown, but we get things done with style in Reno! Where else can you have a throwdown where the two volunteer judges are world champs? We also had this short guy with a camera running around claming the he was a national [...]
