Idaho Hometown Throwdown #3 2012 Results

8 August 2012 No Comment

Sorry for the late writeup but I’ve been replacing my roof that blew off in a storm :-(

Yeah – our first Hometown Throwdown of the year that it didn’t snow or ‘snain’ on us! Plenty of water, weather in the 90s, and pumped-up paddlers made for a super fun day.

We were honored to team up with the Kelly’s Kayak Academy (KKA) for their graduation from week long clinics at KWP with Devon Barker-Hicks, Brent LaFay and Troy Wilson. KWP offers free (yes FREE) kayak lessons to Valley County kids grades 5 – 12. I was amazed to see the progress of these young paddlers from the three – 1 week classes. Devon has really put together a great program for accelerated learning in order to get the fun out of paddling. Many of these kids had only five days of paddling under their belt but were already surfing and most have pretty good rolls.

We had 22 paddlers show up and a gaggle of parents and spectators. Everyone enjoyed the show from the adult paddlers to the inspiring new kayakers. We not only had paddlers from Valley County, but Boise, Oregon and Montana. Afterward we met in the KWP visitors center and drew for prizes, then had a ceremony for the KKA students while we munched on free hotdogs provided by KWP. We were pleasantly surprised to have Mark and Kristina Pickard in town and catch the end of the event. Mark and Kristina funded the construction of the park and Kelly’s is named in memory of Kristina’s sister.

It was a great ending to a busy month! Props to our event sponsors and our loyal local sponsors.  And a big thanks to Devon, Brent, Troy and Daniel for running safety.

Looking forward to seeing many of these kids back at our next Throwdown on August 18th. Join us if you can :-)
