W.PA Creek Series Race Event #3 : Isaac Ludwig Top Yough Race

6 April 2012 No Comment

The Western PA Region of World Kayak is proud to partner up with the organizers of the annual Isaac Ludwig Top Yough Race. Isaac was a good friend of mine and many who paddle in the area. IR front man Jon Harmon ( race organizer ) and the Ludwig family have graciously agreed to open the race to the series and we truly appreciate their generosity. We paddle this event with heavy hearts for the great boater and friend Isaac was to all who had the good fortune to know him.

Isaac Ludwig Top Yough Race April 7th 2012

Ladies and Gentlemen, the calendar has been marked for the 2012 Top Yough Race. This year on April 7th local and non-local boaters will meet at Swallow Falls state park to race down one of the most fun class IV, V- (depending on flows) sections of river. The race will begin at Swallow Falls and end at the pool below Suck Hole rapid.

This year we will incorporate a long and short boat class, so participants can race within in both classes. Recommendations for participating in both classes and length requirements below. The race venue will be very similar to last year. The streams and dreams bed and breakfast will be available to racers and friends to socialize before and after the race. Food will be served, prizes will be awarded and anyone in need of a place to stay is welcome to stay at the take-out house.

Parking Parking Parking. All I can do is recommend a couple places to park and encourage carpooling. This year especially we need to be aware of the parking situation. Complaints make us concerned with where we are putting vehicles. First and foremost, show up with a loaded car!!!! Extra vehicles can be left at the Upper Yough put in, or Forked Run (recreation area a quarter mile from the take out) To get to Forked Run, drive towards the put-in from the take out. After your first hair pin left turn continue up the hill and make a left on shingle camp rd. IMMEDIATELY make a left into Forked Run Rec area. A big Ranch like wooden gate marks the spot. Drive under the wooden gate and continue until you’ve reached the open parking lot.

Volunteers: We can always use them, please send me an e-mail if you are interested in helping with food, time, safety or have any suggestions. Registration: Location: Streams and Dreams take out house or pre-register.

Pre-register at www.topyoughrace.com. Day of registration: Racers will pay a $15 race fee and sign a waiver to participate.

Registration starts at 9am and ends at 11am. If you don’t sign a waiver and pay your dues, YOU DO NOT RACE! No exceptions.

Participate in both classes: My recommendation is to leave both the long and short boat at the put in. Long boat race will be first. After your race leave your boat at suck hole and jog/walk the river right trail back to your short boat. This will reduce vehicle traffic and is definitely quicker then floating all the way to the take out.

Boat Class Requirements: Short Boat: anything 8’6’’ and below Long Boat: anything 8’7’’ and above If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me. I can’t wait to see everyone and hope for a great turn out.
