Western PA Region : Creek Race Series Event 1 : Saturday Feb 18, Lower Big Sandy

15 February 2012 3 Comments

Three Rivers Paddling Club, in conjunction with World Kayak, is sponsoring a monthly race series. This month the race will be held on the Lower Big Sandy in West Virginia on the 18th. Race start will be at Noon with registration opening at 11. Any volunteers wishing to help out please show up around 10 to 10:30.

To compete in the race you must be a member of Three Rivers Paddling Club, dues are $10 and membership forms will be available on the day of the race at registration.

The race will be from the put-in on river right above the Rockville bridge to the pool below Wonder Falls. This will be a timed event where competitors race individually for the best time. There will be various classes of boats, similar to Top Yough/Green Race.

The Big Sandy is a more difficult run so this will be an EXPERT CLASS only race (some of our monthly races have a beginner class). While the section from the put in to Wonder is mainly Class 2-3, Wonder Falls itself is a Class 4 Waterfall. If you have never run the lower Big Sandy before, it is not recommended that you compete in the race.

The race will be held as long as the Big Sandy gauge is above 4.8’ and below 7.3’

There is a path/road along river right down to Wonder Falls and there is a great spot to view Wonder Falls in case anyone would like to come and spectate.

If anyone wants to help with safety, it would be greatly appreciated.

I think more creek boaters would be interested in this event if it were being held further down river. the section above wonder falls is really flat, and the best continuous whitewater is below big splat. just a thought.

    Geoff,

Thanks for the feedback. I didn’t personally set up this course. WK for the W.PA region in an effort to get a better turn out is working in conjunction with the local paddling clubs TRPC and the Benscreek Canoe Club. As we move ahead we will be working towards making the events as exciting as possible and I think that the courses we have planned for future events will be more in line with what your looking for.

    Hope to see you there.

    Cheers,

    Jason
