USNWC Charlotte Pro Am

5 September 2011 No Comment

The Pros and Ams came out for the WorldKayak /USNWC Pro-Am in force to benefit First Descents for the second year of this awesome event.  The Pro Am was held on Saturday August 27th and we lucked out with a great day for throwingdown.  The event raised $1900 for First Descents.  First Descents is committed to curing young adults of the emotional effects of cancer and empowering them to regain control of their lives by experiencing whitewater kayaking and other challenging adventure sports in a safe, fun and supportive environment.

Pro kayakers sponsored by Bliss-Stick, Dagger, Jackson, Liquid Logic, Pryhana and Wavesport came out and volunteered to instruct and compete in an event consisting of a Hometown Throwdown and Boatercross Race with 2 everyday boaters or “amateurs.”  For some of the folks it was their first trip to the USNWC.

The teams got together at noon and were able to spend several hours getting to know each other, paddle, get some great instruction and get ready for the competition.  Participants ranged in age from 10ish to well let’s just say older, but it was all good as everyone was having a blast. There were a lot of different skill levels and so we got to see all sorts of tricks the Pros were teaching their teams how to loop to the show stopping rail grab and the now infamous Brown Claw.  The Throwdown started at 3 pm with our MC’s Chris Wing, Brian Jennings and the one and only ginger Corey Volt.  The teams competed in heats of two with each rider getting  three 45 second rides.  The competition was held in Well hole which provide a nice hole for looping and rail grabbing madness.  The Pros were coaching their team members throughout their rides; it was a positive fun vibe watching everybody trying out all the new tricks they just learned and being cheered on by the crowd to GO BIG.  There were even some epic swims including a dual swim by Pros Corey Volt and Daniel Dutton and a true “dry” exit while surfing the hole by the “Pros pro.”

After the Throwdown everyone headed over to the Comp Channel and participated in a head to head Boatercross Race.  The Armatures had to touch flags in three of the eddies and the Pros had to get four eddies including the Room of Doom right above Big Drop.  The competition was fierce and with the tough eddies and floating undercuts (Rafts) it was an exciting race.   Corey made up for his early swim by pulling off an amazing boof in the last eddy of the finals race to take the win for the Pros. Hunt from the Nanny Gorge took the Boatercross for the armatures.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors and volunteers for making this event possible and fun for everyone.   It was awesome to have so many folks from First Descents and the local paddling community on hand taking pictures and doing whatever was needed to raise the fun level one more notch.  On a special note we would like to THANK the USNWC for another great year and for donating an All Sports Pass that was raffled off to raise even more money for First Descents.  The Pass was won by Mike Bushnell , who is currently battling cancer and signed up for the Pro-Am without ever having been in a kayak, thanks to USNWC instructor Trent Thibodeaux for working with Mike and getting him addicted to boating.  Looking forward to seeing you on the water!

Everyone received an event T-shirts made possible through a generous donation by New Star Marketing and designed by Trent Thibodeaux.

Stay Tuned for a great video and fanastic photos!
