USAFK Tour Stop: Buena Vista Pro-Am Rodeo

2 June 2011 No Comment

For four seasons and counting the Beuna Vista Pro-Am Rodeo has been the centerpiece of PaddleFest Weekend. The fifth USAFK Tour Stop for the 2011 series was slated to go off in the LoDo Wave at the BV Park, but with lower flows and a later melt in the Arkansas River Valley, the event was moved upstream to Downtown Hole. Pro Qualifiers for both Men and Women Pro classes took place on Friday, May 27th, with Junior Men/Women, Open Men, C1, OC1, and Pro Semis/Finals on Saturday, May 28th.

Being the first year for an Open category, fourteen participants registered in the Open Men Class leaving with prizes from Stohlquist, Immersion Research, WRSI, Smith, and Jackson Kayak in addition to other generous sponsors. As the amateur series in the US continues to grow, more open events will be featured in conjunction with USAFK Point Series Tour Stops.

The possibilities for the top level competitors seemed limitless in the Downtown Hole, an incredibly uniform feature with an attainable backwash. With the top five Pro Men paddling Carbon Jackson Kayak Rock Stars, it seemed as if anything was possible. Combination moves were the standout element in the finals of Pro Men; Blunt-McNasty, Split-Split, Split-Godzilla, and Loop-Orbit were a few of the linked tricks awarded. The Clean Bonus was also in play as the competitors went all out. Clean Cartwheels, Clean Loops, Clean Godzillas, and Dustin Urban’s Clean McNasty were spotted by the roaring crowd.

Other tricks included Air Loops, Back Air Loops, Godzillas, McNastys, Phonix Monkies, Orbits, Cartwheels, Spins, Roundhouses, and Blunts to name a few. The Downtown Wave in the BV Park enabled the competitors to put on a show, throwing down and receiving the following scores:

This event was one for the books, and with the first place ride breaking the 1600 mark, rumor is that the highest score to date in US freestyle kayaking was recorded. Expect to see more amazing scores as the season progresses and the freestyle possibilities grow. Thanks to South Main and Buena Vista for hosting an amazing event.
