Idaho Hometown Throwdown #4 – with the Jacksons!

9 July 2010 2 Comments

I’ll have to just start by stating this – This Throwdown was way too much fun! Let me count the ways:

  1. E.J., Dane and Family showed up
  2. Kids from the team trials in Missoula showed up
  3. There were tons of spectators
  4. It was 4th of July weekend
  5. The water and weather finally warmed up
  6. Did I mention that E.J., Dane and Family showed up?

You can’t go wrong when the Jacksons show up at an event. The whole family is a blast. And little KC, like his dad, doesn’t know a stranger!

The Jackson motor home, piled with boats and mini-cooper in tow, screeched into the parking lot at 3:59:57pm – a good 3 seconds before our start-time. E.J. likes showing up early for an event. And Kristine thought he was going to be late… He and Dane put in just as we were starting and they milled around the eddy answering questions, giving pointers, and Dane helps score a bit as well.

As mentioned, a bunch of the kids from the Team Trials stopped by and what a great bunch of kids – I really enjoyed talking to them. It was good to see Joe Carberry again as well, I used to sit and watch him surfing an H3 at Climax Wave back when I first started paddling.

For the men – I would say we had a “plethora” of moves thrown! Huge loops, Helix, Donkey flips, Space Godzillas, Blunts, McNastys – I was glad Mark Cecchini and Dane were scoring the variety! Tommy had endless energy and threw every move mentioned and Mark was close behind. Joe had a quiet first ride, but his last two jumped him way up in the pack for K1-A. For K1-B Walt, Titus and Tyler all threw a lot of nice 45-degree spins. Tyler took a couple of hand-paddling attempts and after a short ride in the hole each time got a paddle tossed to him, but he was pretty whipped. Matt made one ride and then jumped out to take pics for the local paper.

For the Women, included McCall resident, Devon Barker, and the gals from Team Trials, Lauren and Taylor. Devon had some beautiful loops, and hit Space Godzillas, Helix, Blunts – she is really smooth on the water. Lauren hit loops and McNastys. Taylor a bunch of vertical and 45-degree spins – and she always had BIG smile paddling back up the eddy, which in a Throwdown is worth a few points as well!

Alec Voorhees had some huge loops for the youth, as did Eric. Max had this crazy thing he calls a Ninja-Spin (I think) which was a double clean spin with a paddle twirl and it looked really cool. Max and Hayden each had a nice loop in their little Shooting Stars. Troy was back off injured reserve from a broken arm (don’t tell his doctor that we ripped his cast off a week early so he could paddle with E.J. and Dane) and threw a flurry of spins.

After the event Mark and Christina Pickard, the reason the park is there, treated all the paddlers to hotdogs and drinks – and threw in four tickets for the Blues Traveler concert in Donnelly this August into the raffle. This concert is a fund raiser for the park. Check it out HERE.

Kelly’s Whitewater Park is an excellent venue for our Throwdowns. The really cool part is that you have all the amenities; bathrooms (very cool ones), dressing room, beautiful visitors center. Yet it keeps that outdoor feel as it sets on the outskirts of town. Whether you paddle or not, it’s worth checking out.
