Ahhhh its good to be home. I’ve been home for a few days now and
hanging out with my normal crowd doing normal things. Fergus and Mike
and I go to work, jump on the trampoline and find other entertaining
things to do. But yesterday we decided that it was the perfect time for
us to run a drop we had been looking at for a long time.
Its a large slide on the Deerfield River, I’m not sure if its
illegal so I won’t say exactly where but let me just say I was a little
worried as to how it would go. I think all of us started to feel a
little nervous while standing at the top of the drop, mainly because we
didn’t know how it was going to go.
It was sick. Everybody styled the line and I’m sure we’ll be back
for more. Mike and Fergus are on their way down to the white water
symposium [...]

Our Video 1 class has been working on an instructional theme direceted by our very own Daniel Stewart! The name is LOOP SQUAD and this groups job is to teach you guys the latest and greatest freestyle kayaking moves.
Our First Video is a naration with a visual on how to Front Loop a whitewater kayak! On the video side of this segment, our goal was to creat a comprehensive instuctional on how to loop. during this our video class learned how to layer clips so that the video of kayaking would play over the video but not the audio of the instuctional clips. [...]

The new photo project was to take a closer look at things, and enter the macro side of photography. After walking around for a while I chose to shoot the paddles scattered around the trailer. All of the paddles had very cool patterns and lines through out them. With the typical paddle shot being the whole paddle often with someone kayaking with it, it was interesting to zoom in and take a closer look at the motor behind whitewater kayaks.
This shot is of a paddle shaft. With most of the background as well as most of the paddle being out of foucs it really draws the eye into the one focused section with the diamond pattern. This was shot at a f-stop of 4.8 for 1/50th of a second at an ISO of 100. Photo (c) Sam Fulbright.
This is a very similar shot, but it was focused [...]

We started out the school year on the Ottawa river in Canada, a large volume river with many playspots scattered about. The majority of our time was spent at two places, Garberator and McCoy's rapids. 'Garb' was a huge wave with a nice foampile on top, great for throwing any wave trick in the book. This rapid also hosted the Canadian Freestyle Championships the first weekend we were there, which was a super fun event even though the level wasn't very cooperative. The day of the competition the level was low for Garberator, making it really flushy and hard to catch. However, we still all had a great time with many of the other students competing as well. In the end, I ended up flushing on one of my semi's rides landing me in sixth, one spot away from making finals.
A week later we moved to Keener Village (another [...]

The World Kayak initiative would like to announce the recent creation of a new blog Worldkayakblogs.com. This is a first post on this blog’s behalf.

I found this piece of metal sticking out of the waters of the Ottawa River. The water has calm waves flowing through it with a grass bed sitting underneath the water. The stick breaks this tranquility, and is standing in solitude. It was shot at an f-stop of 3.5 with a shutter speed of 1/400th of a second at an ISO of 100. (c) Sam Fulbright
I found this mushroom just sticking out at the base of the tree while walking through the woods. It really stood out against all the green and brown of the trees and moss surrounding it. It just seemed different, and lonely. It was shot at an f-stop of 5.6 with a shutter speed of 1/6th of a second at an ISO of 100

When traveling to the Ottawa river many people have dreams of flying high and hucknig huge on Garberator, clean spinnning endlessly on corner wave, or bravely punching through Phil's Hole. However, tucked away in a corner off to the side in McCoy's Rapid is a ramp.

Anything goes on the ramp. Tricks range from blunts and clean blunts to pan-ams and airscrews, and the most popular trick was the face splat. Many of us were hucking huge, and wiping out hard.

The ramp is always a good spot to have if the line at corner wave of baby face are too long. Most of us start off our session with a one or two rides down the ramp. We snap on our spray skirts and push off to start our slide down [...]

Sam Fulbright is a senior leader at New River Academy, and is in his second year traveling with the program. The folks at NOC
brought Sam up in kayaking, and really instilled a passion in him for kayaking,
particularly freestyle kayaking, and he has been paddling non stop since. Lately a big passion of Sam's has been taking photographs of his adventures and travel. Obviously there is a focus on whitewater kayaking shots, but he also really enjoys capturing the culture and landscapes of the places he travels to. Sam's non kayaking photos can be seen here. Enjoy!

I'm Daniel Stewart, a student leader at New River Academy and whitewater kayak instructor for the US National Whitewater Center. This year I will be travelling with New River Academy and documenting our adventures as we travel the world in places such as Canada, China, Chile, and the U.S. I was also lucky enough to win a video scholarship from LVM (Lunch Video Magazine) which will allow me to post updates you can check out from here.
