January in the Gorge

It’s January in the Gorge.  What does that mean?  Well every year is different.  Sometimes it means snowy roads and hills.  Sometimes it means frozen rain which makes our roads a nightmare to drive on and freezes to the trees which causes them to break and fall into the river.

American Whitewater Gauley Fest

Welcome to Gauley Fest, the paddling worlds biggest party! Started in 1983 to celebrate the derailment of a hydro-electric project that would have disrupted whitewater flows on the Gauley, Gauley Fest has grown to become the largest river festival in the world, posting attendance numbers of over 5,000 people in 2002. The event focuses on bringing people to the area to enjoy a weekend of outdoor activities while showcasing whitewater paddlesports and raising funds and membership for American Whitewater

News from Scott Fisher (APE’s Safety/Education Officer): More great news, this time for our kayakers. Four time World Freestyle Champion and founder of Jackson Kayaks, Eric “EJ” Jackson, has agreed to come teach a clinic for APEs in March 2015. This will likely be a one day river running/freestyle clinic on the Nolichucky Gorge.
