Boise Hometown Throwdown for June Moved - Too Much Water!
June 6, 2009, 5:00 pm

Hey everyone - We have decided to postpone the June Throwdown and move it to another date. We have so much water that the gutter is full and has no good waves, Most of this weekend there was even too much water for the bladder wave - it just glassed out. And when it is in it may only be in for a short time and then change again.

In Boise the 36th street wave is pushing to the far side of the river and many would miss the must-make eddy on the near side and end up washing down stream where the river is flowing through the brush/trees with no eddies. I checked it out today and right now the hole is pretty trashy.

I’ll talk to everyone at the next TD and find what works best, I imagine that we will add it in the first or second week of September - But I’ll leave that up to the participants :-)

Thanks and see you at the Kickoff meeting for the Boise River Park on Thursday!

Our next Throwdown is Wednesday, June 10th at the Gutter. We have moved the date in order to accommodate the kickoff for the Boise River Recreation Park that was scheduled on the 11th.

So we will meet Wednesday for this month at 5:30 for registration and hit the wave at 6pm. I’ll bring my grill, so bring you favorite grill food for after the event if you would like to stick around and enjoy the warm evenings that are here! As usual we will draw for prizes after the event.

We are teaming up with Alpenglow Mountainsport in order to add Jackson Kayak Demo-Daze to the mix. Alpenglow will provide a slew of boats for you to test out during the evening.

If possible, please register for the event online at http://worldkayakblogs.com/throwdown/register/ (then click on the link for Boise Throwdown #3). If you have ANY problems creating a login, registering, etc - let me know. I can fix you up pretty fast.

Also - don’t forget the PBR this Friday!

There will also be a silent auction on some amazing desserts. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Alzar School (a local Boise 501c3 nonprofit) and a special scholarship fund for Idaho students.

Movie Description:
The Call of the River: The Twisted History of Whitewater Paddling
The story of whitewater is a collage of unexpected influences. The canoeing roots of the sport were in summer camps, explorer scouts, and clubs. Early exploration of rivers was in elegant wood and canvas boats. Early kayaking participants were often chemists, scientists, and engineers unfazed by the barriers presented by newly evolving resins that it took to build boats.

In the early days you had to be willing to build your own boat, teach someone to paddle so you had a shuttle, mail 30 cents of stamps in exchange for a water level, and attend races to obtain paddles and other gear. A sixpack of beer could persuade a damkeeper for a water release.

Growth of paddling in the US exploded in the 70andrsquo;s, spurred by the movie Deliverance and the Olympic Games, and more recently by indestructible plastic kayaks. Now nearly 16 million participants crave the outdoor sport lifestyle.

Featuring old school canoeing and kayaking footage, and riveting interviews with the early pioneers andldquo; The Call of the Riverandrdquo; provides a behind the scenes look at the ingenuity that made kayaking, from the European emigrants escaping communism to the American entrepreneurs who build the boats of today. We meet many of the wonderfully eclectic personalities involved in the evolution of paddling, and watershed moments of how paddling became one of the premiere outdoor sports of today.

What: Rally for River Recreation
Where: Quinn’s Pond, at the end of Pleasanton Avenue, between Idaho River Sports and the Greenbelt
When: 6 to 8 pm, Thursday, June 11

This is the first of what we hope will become an annual kickoff to the paddling season on the Boise River. Weandrsquo;d like to get as many paddlers as possible to show their support and join us for a photo shoot in Quinnandrsquo;s Pond at 6 pm, followed by a short update on the status of the Ray Neef, MD, River Recreation Park and some exciting announcements. At this point we are coordinating some other details, but we hope to have entertainment and are inviting food vendors, and retailers and other organizations to set up displays. Idaho River Sports is donating raffle prizes for those who participate in the photo shoot.

SPECIAL NOTE: I feel it is important to show our support for the park. We are likely reschedulig the Hometown Throwdown scheduled for this evening to the previous evening - June 10. Stay tuned…

If You Are Boating In Idaho - Ya Gotta Get A Sticker
May 19, 2009, 1:00 pm

The new law is currently in affect, however I’m not sure exactly when they are going to begin enforcement.

The new law is supposed to protect Idaho waters from the invasive ‘Zebra Mussel‘. If you live in-state or are a visiting paddler you have to get a sticker to paddle in Idaho. The only non-motorized boats exempt from this law are inflatables 10 feet and under. (So I guess a 9 foot inflatable will not transport mussels, but a 5 foot playboat will…?).

I, however, am not going to stick it on my boats - stickers tend to come off. I laminated mine and zip-tied them inside my cockpit.

Anyway - you can order them online at http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/stickerpurchase.aspx for $5 each.

First Run Down Grandjean Section of the SF Payette
May 12, 2009, 7:49 am

Sacajawea Putin - Grandjean IdahoSaturday my boys and I ran the Grandjean section of the Payette’s South Fork from Sacajawea Hot Springs to just north of Warm Springs Creek near Bonneville Hot Springs. Excellent section and pretty remote - totally different than the Main or Cabarton runs. We paddled about 7.25 miles chocked full of class II / III rapids, saw elk and eagles, really a fun day with the boys! Bonnie and the girls dropped us off at the putin and it was great to watch the girls play in the hot springs.

MAP OF THE RUN IS <HERE>.

The section from Sacajawea Hot Springs to the bridge at Wapiti is a fun creek style run. Then it alternates between narrow and wider sections with lots of blind turns to keep you on your toes watching for wood. All in all it is pretty busy in a kayak between eddy hopping, scouting downstream and dodging rocks.

We had three portages for logjams - all in the first 4 miles (above the confluence with Canyon Creek.) A couple of places we could skirt around a slot 3 feet wide that the tree didn’t cover. Definitely road scout what you can and really watch for wood on the way down.

I guess logs tend to pile up in the rapid at Canyon Creek - you can road scout that right after you cross the bridge on the gravel road (NFD 524)to Granjean. There is a pullout abut 50 yards past the bridge. Walk out on the point of rocks and check out the walled out, narrow section.
