Buey 1st Day on the River Paddling Unassisted

This was Buey 1st day really paddling by himself last summer right after his 4th birthday.  We ran the Buckhorn section of the Salmon above Stanely and put in a little above the usual put in of the bridge.  He had to be cajolled into the river that day and refused to wear his wetsuit, which I usually insist, but once he got on the water it all clicked and he was love’n it.

It was great for him because it was the first day on the river that he was his ‘own man’ and could go wherever he wanted.  He had been that way on the lake for a couple weeks, but moving water as we all know is diffenent.  The way he was catching eddys and especially pivoting around rocks on a pretty busy class II+ run really blew me away.  I guess all that time paddling with me in my boat and behind me tethered together did really make a difference.
