Finding rivers during a drought
The drought in Georgia this spring and summer has caused most natural flow rivers to dry up. The whitewater boaters I know in the Atlanta area are mostly entertaining themselves on dam released rivers like the Ocoee, Cheoah, Nantahala, and Pigeon, and the whitewater park in Charlotte (none of which happen to be in Georgia!). Options actually in GA are catching the Columbus wave on a good day, running the class II metro Hooch, and doing extreme low flow (ELF) runs on Sec. 4 of the Chattooga…where you can make a day of intentionally swimming rapids and exploring pot holes and other riverbed features…in places where you ordinarily wouldn’t want to be out of your boat.

How crazy is it that as I’ve been writing this post about finding rivers in a drought a big thunderstorm came in pouring heavy rain in Atlanta? Maybe the river gods are at play ![]()
