April 27th, History made in Alabama

April 27th, History made in Alabama

Well internet is back at full speed and the past few months have brought some of the most dangerous yet humbling experiences of my life.  On April 27, 2011, Alabama was nearly ripped apart by the most destructive EF 4 and EF 5 tornados in state recorded history. This southeastern storm coined, “April’s Fury” took with it the homes of over 20,000 residents leaving a death toll of more than 200 in its wake.  With all the new technology of communication you can see how the state was better prepared for the largest and most violent storm in history.  Many storms will come through Alabama during the spring but we are usually on alert for one tornado.  Never have I seen a tornado affect this state in so many different areas.  When Alabamians wake up in the morning we beg for warm weather and tons of rain each spring.  All your social networking websites are littered with comments about wanting rain.  This was the same old routine until people saw how devastating this storm was going to be.  In the end what this disaster seemed to invoke was an overwhelming sense of compassion and awareness from the kayaking community.  “We do continue to hope and pray for rain in the south, but not at the expense of others.”

2011-05-05-14-13-14

Here is a list of some great videos of the tornadoes from different regions of the state.

Great video of tornado- http://youtu.be/5ohIVzIZLuQ

Here is a radar graph of all the spots that were hit.  After the tornado was over, I found a paycheck from a teacher at the University of Alabama.  This paycheck was from 1969.

The clean up began the next day.  Some cities such as Pleasant Grove have been completely destroyed besides the few streets that were spared.  One thing that most people do not realize is how many looters come out of the woodworks to steal stuff.  This was more true in Pleasant Grove at my parents house that most anywhere.  My Dad actually caught a group of guys stealing stuff from homes and had them arrested.  And yes he got to pull his gun.  He was interviewed by the newspaper and was given a State Troopers coin for his hard work.  In this town my Dad took some pictures to give you an idea of how bad the damage was.  Here are a few of the good ones.  Think about a 2 x 4 being through a tree, a hubcap cutting through tree or pine needles getting put through brick.  That is some amazing power.

With all the destruction that has happened here please make sure to google pictures and look at it.  There are plenty of places to donate money to help with the great cause of restoring Alabama.  My heart goes out to Cullman, Tuscaloosa, Blountsville, Fultondale, Pratt City and Pleasant Grove.  The one thing that makes me smile in all of the spring madness is seeing the kayaking community and volunteers that took time of work to help people that had their lives flipped upside down.

Whitewater Parks in Alabama

With 2011 season underway and now in full steam this winter was busy.  I am involved in two major projects to bring whitewater parks to Alabama.  I really think the hardest part is going to be breaking ground.  The first started with a presentation in front of the City of Heflin.  From there the Calhoun County City Council and the City of Anniston showed some great interest.  After numerous videos, sales pitches, and meetings we are on the way.  The feasibility study is done courtesy of Rick McLaughlin. Now comes the economic impact study done by Jacksonville State University.  Please keep an eye out for this project as it well designed and would include three or more channels, disc golf, camping, mountain biking, tubing, rafting, camping, swimming and more.  The mountain biking would connect to Pinoti trail from Anniston to Atlanta.  The best part of the entire project is it in the city of Oxford right behind the shopping center complete with several businesses, restaurants and motels.  This would be a prime location to have a major whitewater competition and festival.    Keep your fingers crossed because Interstate 20 and the home of Oxford is one of the only cities in the southeast within a distance from Atlanta, Birmingham, Savannah, Huntsville, Dothan, Montgomery, Chattanooga, Nashville, Knoxville and more.  The sky is the limit.  Here are a couple of links for more information on the Anniston Whitewater Park.  We hope that you post something on your Facebook to keep everyone interested.

Anniston Write-up on Fox-AL

Anniston Star Write-up

In addition to Anniston I am also involved in the park in Gadsden.  Here is some more information on it.  Make sure to sign the petition on this park.  This will be a major piece of leverage in our next Q and A with the city showing the interest of all people.  My wish is I am hired to be creative consultant and I get to use all my years of kayaking and water knowledge to build the best whitewater park in the country.

Max visits Alabama

Spring Kayaking for Kids in BAMA!!!

This year started out with a bang.  I was blessed with two great kids coming to stay with me and train for the World Championships this spring. The first kid to show up at the house was Boulder, CO paddler Max Karlsson.  Max has dual citizenship with Sweden and the United States and will be representing Sweden at the World Championships.  With Max here and United States Freestyle Junior Team Member and Jackson Team Member Nico Tinozzi on the way our training would be on some of the Locust Fork features such as Ender Hole and King’s Bend and the Mulberry Fork of the Warrior.  Before Nico was picked up from the airport Max competed in the Mulberry Fork Canoe and Kayak Races.  Another local kid Bennett Smith joined us on the trips.  With good water in our sights we set out to work on freestyle tricks, technique of these trips and learning how to compete.  It was a great two weeks with great water.  My favorite part of the entire trip was watching Max and Nico hit some of the tricks for the first time.  These tricks included Ticky Whu, Air Blunt, Pan Am Blunt, Air Screw, Macho Move, Orbit and McNasty. I absolutely have a passion for teaching kids as I remember some of the greatest moments of my childhood were freestyle trips I would take with friends such as Corran Addison, Shane Benedict and EJ.  Now here I am 20 years later with life coming full circle and now I am passing this knowledge that was bestowed upon me by these great kayakers. Here are two videos of the trips.  One from Brad Huie that set his camera up to recorded for just one day. The other from Max and Bennett spending time together and going through footage.  Check out their skills.

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Enjoy and remember to get the kid’s in kayaks.  I also wanted to say how proud of these two kids for what they did at the world championships.  Way to go guys.

Big Scarum- Alabama Secret Jewel

One of my favorite runs in Alabama is Big Scarum that runs into the Locust Fork just upstream of Ender Hole.  Big Scarum is fun in a playboat or creekboat.  Some of the best lines on a single track style, technical but yet straight forward Class 3 creek.  Some days you can run Big Scarum in a playboat doing freewheels, kickflips, rockspins and splats to name a few while running into Ender Hole at the perfect level.  No matter what level Big Scarum is you never know what level the Locust Fork is.  Here is a quick headcam of Big Scarum with a great group of guys on a great afternoon rain.  This creek is just over a mile long.  What usually gets people on this creek is having to think on your feet, quickly.  Notice how the river just keeps on dropping at a steady pace and when it starts it reminds me a quick fast downhill mountain bike track with only one line. This is one of the best runs in Alabama. Safe, short and with good gradient make for a wonderful day each time.  See you soon Big Scarum.

“Hey man, when are you gonna take me kayakin” Coosa river trip.

So, for all those times people have asked me, “Hey man, when are you gonna take me kayakin?”, here is your opportunity. I am organizing a day-trip down the Coosa river. I have done this once before and the folks I took still talk about it. It is a great 4 hour trip down the Coosa on sit-on-top kayaks. The river is very tame and I have seen kids as young as 10 years old do it by themselves. There are whitewater rapids, but it is flat between the rapids and they are all class II. There is one class II+/III. You can get out and look at it, as this is where we will all stop to hang out for a bit.

They have one and two person kayaks that are easy to get on and off while floating down the river. You can strap coolers to the back and bring your lunch and beverages. (small soft coolers are best.)

This is my way of showing everyone that hears me ramble on about the sport what it is all about.

This event is open to whoever would like to go, young and old alike.
***********

********************************************

STEP #1
*****YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN RESERVATION******
CALL (334) 567-3788
ASK FOR KAREN or for rental reservation
Tell them you are with the “Hey man when you gonna take me kayakin” Trip

Cost – (Day of rental price is $5 more and there is not guarantee you will get a boat. Don’t chance it.)
$20 per one seat kakak
$40 per two seat kayak or canoe
*Canoes are available, but I would not recommend them. It is hot and if you flip, they are hard to right.
***Rental info - http://www.coosaoutdoorcenter.com/rentals/canoe-kayak-rentals-2/

**Personal boats – If you have a personal boat, you are welcome to use it instead of renting and don’t have to make a reservation. Please make sure you have a PFD (Personal Flotation Device/life jacket) and all equipment you need. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE A RESERVATION IF YOU USE YOUR OWN BOAT.

STEP #2
Release form – Fill this out in advance to save time and bring it with you.
http://www.coosaoutdoorcenter.com/rentals/release-forms/

STEP #3
******************What to bring ***********************
Change of clothes
Towel
water
Sun Glasses (with a strap or just cheap)
Sunscreen
water shoes (cheapo type from walmart are fine)
Waterproof bag (not a must)
Water
Lunch (in zip lock bags)
Cooler (if you so desire. Small ones suggested)
Beverages (of your choice. No glass)
water
Hat
Sunscreen

****Drinking Warning – If you choose to drink adult beverages, I would not over do it. Although this is somewhat of a float trip, you will have to paddle and that is not easy to do intoxicated. This is not a drunk trip. If you choose this path, you will regret it.

****You will have to sign a release form and sit through a quick training class at the outfitter. You are responsible for yourself and your dependents. I, nor the other support boaters, nor the outfittter will not be responsible for your bad decisions. I cannot stress this enough.

This is going to be a great trip. This is a full day of paddling and enjoying the water and wildlife. We have seen eagles, fish and other interesting animals on this river.

STEP #4
******************How to get there*********************
Meeting up to carpool-
We will be meeting at George Ward Park in the parking lot (Greensprings intrance). We might as well pile in together and that will save on gas.
WE WILL LEAVE AT 9AM SHARP. DO NOT BE LATE.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=George+Ward+Park&sll=33.490891%2C-86.81875&sspn=0.012473%2C0.016694&ie=UTF8&t=h&oi=geospell&ct=clnk&cd=1&geocode=FfD7_gEdVjvT-g

Meet you there -
You can meet us there if you want to. Just be at the outfitter by 11:15 at the very latest in order to make sure our group goes out together. (They will let your boat go to someone else if you are not at the check in desk 30 minutes in advance)

Get Directions to the Outfitter —

**THIS IS PEAK SEASON FOR THE OUTFITTER. IF YOU ARE LATE AND THERE ARE NOT BOATS, YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MORE COME IN. DON’T BE LATE.

Just a quick note. I am sorry if I come off a bit strong with some of the comments about being late and drinking. These 2 items are very important for making sure it all goes well for you guys. Once you get on the river, it is all good.

Freestyle Classes are now open.

Kayaking classes for 2010

Well it is that time of the year as the flowers has started to bloom.  As most of you know teaching kayaking has always brought joy to me.  Something about sharing your knowledge of this great sport and taking someone down the river for the first time is amazing.  There are some new things for 2010.  With ambitions comes legwork to get things accomplished.  Many people ask me what kind of clinics I teach.  Well, I teach all of them including: freestyle, beginner, intermediate, advanced, creeking, slalom, group and kids clinics. The rates change based on how many people and which type of class you are interested in.  For freestyle I have the option to teach playboating clinics on the Ocoee River through Ace Ocoee Funyaks.  This gives us the permit to be there without any problems and an abundant amount of different features to learn on.  For beginner clinics they will be taught on the Locust Fork or Mulberry Fork of the Warrior River.  These are great beginner rivers and offer a variety of different features to learn on.   They have large pools, great eddy lines and warm water in the winter.  If the water here is too low then we will go down to the Coosa River.  With group classes there are great rates to save you money and get that one extra person in the class that wants to learn.

In addition I am getting instruction boats from Jackson Kayaks enabling me to teach these classes as well and have the opportunity to teach kids classes. This is going to be great for Hydrenaline Rush Kayaking School.  Having boats for kids and having the boats for people to try will only give you the opportunity to test paddle before you buy.  Make sure to forward this one to anyone you know that would be interested in kayaking classes or helping with the kid’s kayaking classes.  Thanks for reading and I hope to see yon the river soon.

Private instruction is available for weekdays upon request with a two-week notice.

Weekday Rolling Classes are available for 50 dollars per three hours of teaching time.

Hell Hole is back!!!

For those of you who do not know the first time I kayaked the Ocoee River I was only 10 years old.  Now after almost 20 years of being there and playing at Hell Hole the excitment is back.  I would like to thank Jamie at Rock Creek Outfitters for letting me use the Super Star for the weekend until my boats come in.  Make sure you tell Jamie, Jeremy Adkins sent you in when you stop in the Ocoee store. Hell Hole goes through stages from being to low, too high or non existent. Over the last two years the hole has turned into a non retentative breaking wave.   Well, that has all changed.  With the breaking of the flume the water is always on meaning the sediment at the bottom is washed out, the rocks are settled and no water up and down.  Morning and night you can go get your Hell Hole on.  Hell Hole was where most aerial hole maneuvers were perfected by Javid Grubbs back in 2000 and 2001.  Now with the new boats and athletic paddlers the potential for going big is ever better.  More consistently people are throwing huge air and Hell Hole offers up some of the best and biggest air in the country.  A great rule of thumb is:  If you could ender a big boat without hitting bottom then you can throw a huge air loop. This is so apparent at Hell Hole.  Huge Air and consitently going big.  Look forward to some big air pics in the creek boats coming soon.   Here are some of the pics that a buddy from high school shot in a hour and one good one from the session at 1 a.m.  I really hope to see you all out there really soon.  Freestyle clinics will be on July 4-5th and August 14-15th for those that are interested email FlyinSkeleton@cs.com.

Waves in Alabama?

You are thinking there are not any waves in Alabama. Most people are under the impression that Alabama does not have whitewater especially surfable waves.  Well you are wrong.  The Mulberry Fork of the Warrior is growing in popularity with every passing day.  Since the evolution of the playboats and increase in technology these waves now offer up every trick in the book.  Yes that is right the Helix in Alabama has been spotted.  When big rains come in the waves at the Mulberry come in.  Some of the more popular waves are Lunch Stop, Dessert Wave, Corner Pocket Wave, Hawaii Five-0 and Joe Momma’s Butt.  Every feature offering up different tricks due to different shapes and corners.  The pictures below are from the two most popular:  Lunch Stop and Hawaii 5-0.  Suprisingly enough, the waves are very consistent in the spring due to a great watertable and spring showers.  Here are some photos of the water as it is coming down. Many are turning into holes but you can still see the structure of the great features.  If you are ever wanting to check the levels go to AlabamaWhitewater.com and click on flowpage.  Then click on Mulberry Fork of the Warrior.  For the waves to come in you need at least 3 feet on the gauge.  NOTE:  To get an accurate reading you have to subtract 3.3 feet from what the internet says.  Hope to see you on the river soon and keep catching air.  Special thanks to Dusty at Coosa Outfitters for letting me use a Super Star until my boats come in.  Thanks again Dusty and make sure to stop and say hello.
