It’s that time again…
Hometown Throwdown Season
This year we have already had more precipitation than any other year in recorded history in the Northern Sierra so flows will be high throughout the summer. With that in mind we are going to go a bit longer this year and hold events through June. So grab your friends, dust off the paddling gear, and meet us in two weeks to kick things off. HTTD will start at 5-530pm on Wednesdays every two weeks.
Because flows will be changing a lot this season, we will be adjusting the event type and location as we go. So check back in for information on the next event. As always Colin has worked to get great sponsors for World Kayak in 2017, this year we already have lots of great gear from:
Remember that we will always have lots of great beer from Ninkasi Brewing.
See you on the 26th!!!!!

Drought!
There is no other way to describe the summer that the Kawartha Whitewater Paddlers are facing. For anyone reading this far from our Central Ontario home, things are PRETTY dry this year. Environment Canada has declared official drought conditions in various Ontario regions, including the area northeast of Toronto where our club regularly paddles and meets for our World Kayak-related Fun Runs. Unfortunately, the lack of water has put a cramp in the type of events that we regularly hold – in fact, it’s so dry that it’s the first year that anyone no one has run the dam that is a big part of our whitewater playground at Burleigh Falls.
Despite the low weather limiting what we can do with the river, we’ve seen a consistent number of between 12-14 paddlers turning up each week to tune their eddying, ferrying and narrow, rocky (and shallow) creeking skills. A bonus has been the appearance of great boof ledge at the bottom of the falls, that is normally totally covered in fast flowing water. It’s been a great place for many to work on their boof technique without any big consequences. One unexpected result of the low water has been an increased number of swimmers at the bottom of the falls, as a result of getting pinned against an unforgiving rock ledge – a pretty tough place to roll up sometimes!
Weather can change and we’re hoping for the best before too long. We’re all giving thanks that the Ottawa River, with it’s reliable, warm flows, is less than 4 hours away.

Sorry for the late write up but I’ve been out of town. We had our first Hone Town Throwdown here in Idaho on June 24th. And our second Throwdown was last night, July 1st.
Trot ran our first HTTD as nobody from Boise could make it to cascade. Hwy 55 was closed due to an accident. So we figured a couple of locals from Cascade may show up since nobody from Boise would be able to make it up. Troy is living in Cascade, teaching at Kellys Whitewater Park so was already there. He texted me five minutes into the competition that 20 competitors showed up from the Cascade and McCall area!
Last night we had 12 paddlers and great weather for our Throwdown. The water levels shot up from 1,400 CDs to 2,100 CDs overnight and made for a flusher wave, but a few paddlers were able to dial it in and we had a great show from everyone. One of the surf instructors even jumped in the mix and had his first surf in a kayak :]
We had a great time at both Throwdowns and looking forward to our last two of the summer. If your in the area find us at Kellys Whitewater Park in Cascade, Idaho!
July 8th – 6PM
July 23rd – 1PM
