2016 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #2

wildwildwes wrote 596 days ago:

The second event in the 2016 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was a new event format for us by racing up river.  We had a good turn out with 12 competitors joining in for some friendly attainment race competition with the Nolichucky Beer League!  We had a few spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the river bank.  The event was held in the Nolichucky River Gorge, TN on a nice mild evening with mostly cloudy skies.

The river level was around 950 CFS and spirits were high with many of the racers eager to give this new race event style a go!  The course start was up at a spot in the bottom of the gorge known as Cherokee Dam above the USA Raft river access.  The finish line was the river right eddy at the bottom of Twin Eddies (The last Class III rapid in the gorge) 1 mile upstream.  The course has several class I-II rapids racers had to ascend to make it to the finish line.  We launched classes in a mass start format and good times were had by all!

The second event in the 2014 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was big booming fun! We had a good turn out with 16 competitors joining in for some friendly freestyle rodeo for the first time since June of 2011!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the river bank.  The event was held at Big Rock on the Lower Nolichucky River, TN with mostly sunny warm weather!

The river level was around 680 CFS; which is just starting to get retentive for play boating at Big Rock with the change in the feature due to the past two years of high flows.  We were all pretty excited though to final get some rodeo competition action in the feature!  A good time was had by all!

Participation in all events is the key to bring home a series championship for the year!  Now that 2 events are complete the heat has been turned up for some of our competitors in their respective classes to make their place on the podium!  The competition is the hottest in the Men’s Intermediate K-1 class with only 40 points separating 1-4 places and a current tie for the 3rd spot!  We also currently have a tie for 1st place in the Men’s Novice K-1 class!  Both of these classes should be fun to watch going into event #3 to see who comes out on top…

California Boating in a No Water Year!

sagedonnelly wrote 1418 days ago:

California has been in a terrible drought for 3 years now, but American Whitewater has made it bare-able for kayakers and rafters to enjoy a few rivers in the state although it is in critical water shortage for its reservoirs. One of the gems of California has been the Feather River Drainage outside of Chico, CA. The Rock Creek section has a minimum guaranteed flow throughout the winter months which make for a GREAT Class 3+ to 4+ section of river that flows 24/7!

The Tobin Section, my personal favorite, is an awesome class 5 section at release flow, but an incredible boof fest section at the lower flow. I have personally run it as low as 265 cfs, but it usually runs about 350 all winter long. I love this section because It has a lot of challenging boofs without a lot of fast moving water so it is great for people stepping up their game without having to deal with fast water consequences. It is short and mostly along a highway, so you can do a lot of laps, or step out if you are in over your head. The Lobin section is an easy class 4 at lower flow because it has a lot of fun boofs with minimal consequences that is great for perfecting technique and getting comfortable using rocks.

Another great success for AW and the American River Conservancy is the weekend release on the South Fork of the American River. This opens up 25+ miles of class 2 -3 river every weekend that have some great rapids and play. Sadly, because of the severe draught, we only have Saturdays this month, but hope that recent storms will change that. It is important to watch the gauges whenever there is a storm or need for power, because they could release on unscheduled days (storms) or on high energy need days-so we never count out the American! Both of these rivers have the California weather influence which make runs throughout winter a pleasant 60-70 degree day!

If you have thought about traveling for winter boating, California is the place. Please contact California Canoe and Kayak (http://www.calkayak.com/) and A Wet State (http://awetstate.com/) or Dreamflows (http://www.dreamflows.com/flows.php?page=real&zone=canv&form=norm&mark=All) for info on any of these rivers, and keep in mind, there is always the ocean if the rivers don’t pan out!

2013 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown #1

wildwildwes wrote 1675 days ago:

The first event in the 2013 Nolichucky Hometown Throwdown series was full of fun! We had 15 competitors join in for some friendly downriver freestyle/slalom and boatercross competition!  We had several spectators who watched and cheered on the competitors from the Riverpark Campground bank & the river right beach.  The event was held at Big Rock on the Lower Nolichucky River, TN with warm humid weather.

The river level was a healthy 2,200 CFS, which made the main Big Rock wave/hole feature a fast flushy wave train.  Since a rodeo competition was not a good option, we came up with a slalom course through the rapid.  Each competitor got 2 runs through the course and each run counted for their “DFS” Score.  The course involved catching 3 eddies down through the rapid.  The first eddy was behind a rock above the main rapid feature.  The second eddy was behind a pour over on river left of the main rapid feature.  The final eddy was in between two swirly eddy lines river right of the main rapid feature.  The competitors got 10 points for each of the eddies they caught.  Competitors had 1:30 minutes to complete the course while attempting downriver freestyle moves along the way to earn additional points from our Variety and Technical judges!

The third run was a boatercross race for each class from the top of the campground and went through the main feature.  Then the race course veered through our version of the “Notch” between two large rocks on river right and finished on the river right beach below the rapid!  This made for a fun zigzag course with a bottle neck at the “Notch”.  We gave 10 pts per place in the boatercross race and summed the BC score with the DFS runs for the grand total!
