Kayaking Rock Island

For all of you in Atlanta who haven’t taken the trip up to Rock Island, you should! Especially in the winter months. The Falls (or Spout) runs a bunch in the winter time, for some 18 to 25 ft drops that can be ran all day long. Not into waterfalls? ITS OKAY, there is some sweet waves and holes below “the spout” that is the training grounds for the Jacksons, Clay Wright and Stephen Wright. During the winter months you may be paddling with Dane, Nick, Stephen or Emily on a regular basis. Its about a 4 hour drive ( being conservative ) to get here and it is a beautiful drive. So get up there and check it out!! Look up The Happy Kayakers, they can help you with accommodations shuttles or whatever you need really. FANTASTIC people!!

Check out this video we made of Rock Island!!

The Boulder Bend Bash

tommygunn wrote 959 days ago:

Originally, the Boulder Bend Bash was intended to be a team time trial event. However, the day the race took place there were one thousand other things going on between The Leavenworth Film Festival and the rafting companies being slammed. So we mixed things up a little bit.

Andy cannot wait to fill out this waiver.

Kyle Scott discussing his training techniques with Tegan

Cody Albright finishing an interview while his team prepares his equipment

Our core group of racers slowly trickled into the take out at the Happy Wave Beach Club where Osprey Rafting was kind enough to let us set up shop. With all of the river guide kayakers tied up in their entertainment duties, we had a relatively small turn out. Nonetheless, it was the most diverse turn out of paddlers any Leavenworth World Kayak event had ever seen.

Hailing from Colorado, we had Andy Zeiger representing the squirt boater scene with team Shark Attack. From Ellensburg, Washington, Eric Wintard was bringing it tough with the inflatable kayak. Holding it down for the modern creek boat class was Kyle Scott, and last but lot least, Darren and Cody Albright had their game faces on as they prepared to assault the race in the Dynamic Duo. I would also like to give a big shout out to Tegan Owens from British Columbia for helping out with the race and gracing us with her presence.

The Valley Mill August MD Chute Out: “Do it for the Love!”

natefry wrote 1241 days ago:

The August MD Chute out usually has a few things you can count on;

1) low water levels

2) heat and humidity

3) low attendance

This August Chute Out would have one out of three, but a great crowd showed up, with 18 competitors and we had great weather for the end of summer. We had full classes in just about every category; Juniors, K1A, K1B, C1, with the exception of K1w.

With the level being just under 2.9ft, the only play spot would be the good ol’ MD Chute. The spot would be on the very low side of good, but even with it not being “ideal” by any means, there were some impressive moves being thrown nonetheless. Local paddler Jordan Poffenberger (current National and World Champion in C1 managed to get some sweet McNasties out of the feature)

We had a big B-class with six competitors who were also throwin down some nice cartwheels and even going for loops on occasion. The rock was definitely in play, however, so once in a while a nice THUMP would be heard when someone was too far left with that cartwheel or loop, and a chuckle would be heard from the crowd.

In the junior class we had Maddie Kimmel, Tom Dolan, and Kaelin Friedenson. These kids were impressive! Kailin’s score would’ve placed him in 3rd in the men’s B class!

The format called for three 30 second rides, with your two best counting. You could paddle back in if you happened to flush (and everyone did) and you could even enter back in for one last move, after you time expired, so you could just “Do it for the loooove” (and everyone did!)

K1 Jr

1st-Kaelin Friedenson 58pts

2nd Tom Dolan 20pts

Maddie Kimmel 16pts
