River of Life has been established for 8 years now on the Nantahala River and will be hosting a special Guest Appreciation Festival service on Sunday morning at 8:30 A.M. on the porch of the Nantahala BBQ & Brew (Located on the river left bank adjacent from the NOC Outfitters Store on river right).  We want this Sunday’s River of Life service to be the biggest ever, so come join Rev. Wayner for this special time!

River of Life will also be working on a special mission project during GAF weekend.

This year our goal is Three Wells in a Weekend!

If you would like to give a monetary or gear donation for this mission bring it by the River of Life tent during the festival.

Chasing Paddles, Boats and Throwing Ropes

Chasing Paddles, Boats and Throwing Ropes

This is what we encountered  while at the Nantahala Open, this weekend.  With many people challenging the Cascades and the upper section of this river, there was a huge amount of fun going on and a lot of carnage.  When I woke up Monday morning to look at my Facebook, all I could see was, “found paddle” and “look at my boat after running the cascades”.   With all of this happening there was so much fun going on at the same time.

At the falls, there was a competition just for crazy things done on Lesser Wesser aka Nantahala Falls.  This photo shows Garrett Madlock with his bumble bee decorated Rockstar ready to brave the falls with his wings on.

Check out this Stinger with a stinger!  Rick Thompson duct taped a chair to the back of his Stinger and Garrett Madlock, dressed like a bee sits on the back challenging the falls ahead.  There was no shortage of action here at the falls.  With Batman and Robin in a Dynamic Duo, to paddling purple inflated dragons, this was a whacky twist on running the falls, to say the least.

What I love to see on the river, is kids having a blast.   Dacey Hay (shown above) had her personal first decent down the lower section of the Nantahala.  Although coming through Pattons Run out of her boat, she quickly got to the side and put her smile back on her face, and continued paddling the rest of the 8 mile section.

With the Upper Nantahala pumping out 550 cfs, it was a rush for me on my first decent! In the end it as a weekend of fun with kids, yet full of carnage and beached boats.

-Nathan Madlock
