Gauley Hometown Throwdown & 4 Square Tournament

When – 9/19/09 9:30am Gauley Festival Saturday.
Where – Lower Gauley put in rocks.
What – World Kayak is hosting a Hometown Throwdown on the Lower Gauley. This will be a rolling rodeo that will see competitors strut their freestyle skills on two different features. The first location will be at Canyon Doors where participants will get two one minute rides to impress our judges. After that competitors will immediately move downstream to Lower Mash. Each competitor will get two attempts to surf the big beautiful wave located in this great rapid. Since it is very unlikely that any boater will be able to stay on the wave for a full one minute ride this will not be a timed event. We are going to implement a special set of judging criteria for this portion that will reward an established surf, style, downtime, and a variety of other common occurrences on this great wave. All competitors are asked to follow normal river etiquette and mix in with other boaters looking to surf these great features. We will have three sets of judges and volunteers to make this event run as smooth and quick as possible, so that we can get back to the festival on time. You must register on line ahead of time at http://worldkayakblogs.com/throwdown/register/168/ . Due to time constraints there will be a limited number of participants allowed, so sign up early. Check in will be at the put in rocks for the Lower Gauley starting at 9:30. As soon as the water arrives we will get started. Awards will be raffled away based on participation, but you do have to be present to win. We will announce results and draw prizes behind the JK RV at 7:30PM. The awards will be followed by a 4 square tournament that will have a $2 buy in. All money will be donated to AW! For more information email colin@worldkayak.com

With all the fun events planned on the Nolichucky River tonight & tomorrow, I want to make sure everyone knows about the main cause for the Noli Splash event. Paddling videos are fun, but this video about First descents really shows how kayaking can change lives and situations.

Tomorrow (July 18, 2009) @ 2:00 P.M. is Event #3 for the 2009 Tri-Cities Nolichucky Hometown Thowdown Series sponsored by WorldKayak.com! We hope you will come out to join in on all the fun!

On-site event registration will be between 1:00-2:00 P.M. @ the Riverpark Campground gazebo for Big Rock or on the river left bank for Jaws. We will kick off the event at 2:00 P.M. with the competitors meeting. I will have the J.A.W. on site with the new 2010 Star & All Stars for anyone interested in a demo. We have a great prize stash to give away to participants at the end of the event!
The weather forecast is looking great for tomorrow (Partly cloudy with mild temps in the upper 70’s)! The current local radar does not look like the Noli watershed is getting much rain from the showers moving through our area. I don’t believe the river level is going to go up too much from the current 514 CFS level (7/17/09 - 8:30 A.M. report). Event #3 will be at Big Rock again as long as the river level does not go above 900 C.F.S. (see “Feature Locations” list in Event #3 link at the bottom of this page for details)
If you have any doubt to where we will have the event tomorrow due to today’s rain, please feel free to check my World Kayak blog, Facebook status, or call my voicemail (423-647-1321) for the event location tomorrow. I’ll have the location info posted/announced by 10:00 A.M. using the contacts above FYI.
Keep in mind that if the event is at Big Rock, you will be required to pay the $3.00 + tax per vehicle Day Pass Admission to Riverpark Campground. Nancy & Bruce (campground owners) have asked that all participates please park in the day use area parking or the field at the front entrance to the campground. Please do not park in a camp site & be courtesy to the campers!
