Hot Lava Boater Cross 2017

We had nine participants in our 1.5 mile boater cross race on the Deschutes River this year.  Lava Island Falls was created by a recent lava flow that blocked the river and created two remote drops with a hidden lake in-between.   Scotty Baker provided the inspiration and ran a fabulous event.  It went so well that we are already collaborating on next year’s event.  The race down Lava I was an exciting exchange of positions as Walker pulled ahead in the S turn chute only to get stuck in the eddy below with Orion.  Jason took the middle route and the lead, down the left hand channel over Brads Bung-hole.  Scotty followed Jason after cutting off Orion who was exiting the eddy.  Coming back for more, Orion rammed Scotty’s stern going over BBH, but by then Walker was up to speed in the RPM and was gaining on Jason going into Cut-em Up.  Across the lake the distance between racers expanded and after a quick run down Lava II they were jockeying for the finish line.   There Walker and Scotty tangled boats while Orion charge by unobstructed for the podium.  All boaters had a mostly clean run and the raft support sweep followed everyone out.  This was a very exciting pilot event from which we hope it will grow to become a local classic.

A group of talented local boaters gathered at the Bend Whitewater Park Wednesday at 6pm to throw freestyle moves on Jason’s wave.  The wave was set to be a small foam pile on surfer’s right and a green wave to the left.  The weather was 95 degrees and the water was fine.  We did get a visit from the Bend Metro Parks and Recreation District code enforcement personnel who asked if any money was required to participate in the Throw-Down.  Thanks to World Kayak and their sponsors we were good to go with waivers signed  and a mix of participants/non-participants taking turns on the wave.  The boaters were having so much fun pushing the limits of Jason’s wave that we stayed past the end of completion and left just before dark. Loops are still hard to achieve, but there were more than last Fall’s HTTD. Several participants were gratefully surprised that swag was based only on participation and I look forward to seeing my friends sporting the good looking drivers cap.

The construction of Bend’s new whitewater park is on schedule to be finished with the in-water components by April 15 when the irrigation season begins.  The work is going at a blistering pace and the channels are taking form.  I hope to hold a few HTTDs this summer on the new play features.  This will be a top of the line play park with 4 fully adjustable features.  Watch the video to see the progress.
