Brush Creek 2011

2011
09.22

It has been a long while since I have been to my personal WK blog but I come bearing gifts of new videos.  This one is very overdue but better late than never.  I got to visit Kernville this year for the first time and I got to paddle Brush creek.  It was wicked.  It was running about 2.5-3 ABU’s.  Some folks thought that was getting to big, but I was still looking for more water.  The race and the festival were great.  I can not wait for next year!  Enjoy the video.

Please help my good friend, Jason Craig!

2011

IMG_7574Ever since I moved to Reno from the east coast there have been a few constants in my boating life on the left coast.  One of those has been my boating buddy Jason Craig.  From numerous trips to the south fork for play, creeking on 49 to B, and even helping me take my wife down Pauley creek for the first time he has been a positive ball of energy that is simply fun to be around.  If you have not heard Jason recently had a bad accident that landed him in the hospital, and he is need of our help as a strong boating community.  Keep sending goos vibes his way and if you have the means please donate here

The Midwest Freestyle Championships

2010
08.26

midwestfree 063This past weekend I had the privilege to coach the Midwest Freestyle Championships for the third year in a row.  The weekend starts off with two days of clinics on Thursday and Friday.  It has been very gratifying as an instructor to watch a solid group of students come back for all three years and continue to improve.  We have managed to sell out the clinics for the past three years, and to me that is a sign of a community that loves boating and wants to continue to evolve their skills for a life time of boating fun.  After two long days of clinics we get to the main event on Saturday and Sunday.  The folks at Wausau Whitewater do an amazing job of putting together one of the most fun experiences a competitor could ask for.  Saturday brings the preliminaries for all skill levels in the freestyle events.  Wausau has categories ranging from masters to women to expert.  I believe that the beginner category had over 70 participants this year.  Unfortunately I was not able to watch that event because I was judging the intermediate and expert preliminaries.  Unfortunately the tendonitis in my right forearm kept me from defending my boater cross and freestyle medals from last year.  Don’t worry kids I will be back next year!  Saturday is always capped off with movie night.  This year we premiered “Facetime” from Nick Troutman.  We had a huge crowd for the movie in the basement of the VFW.  After the movie it is time to get to the heart and soul of the Wausau boating community, FOUR SQUARE!  The Team Pabst boys never disappoint!  They also unveiled a new game this year called Louisville Chugger, but that is a whole different story.  Sunday morning brought about the boatercross race.  Thanks to John McConville for taking care of the camera for me while I was managing the starting line.  Enjoy the video!

This is the time of day when you start to realize that you are tired.  After the boatercross the team freestyle events occur.  If you have never watch or participated in a team freestyle event, you need to!  Teams of three boaters have two minutes to get the job done.  You can formulate the plan that works best for your team.  It can involve a strategic break down of the moves that people are the best at or you can try to put two boaters in the hole at the same time.  Needless to say it is a great time.  If that was not enough exertion the individual freestyle finals are next.  We saw a number of great rides again this year from all of the skill levels.  John McConville managed to win the expert category again this year.  Its mine next year John!  Thanks to Adrian Ortiz for taking care of the camera for me during these events.  I was glued to the judging tent for most of the day.  The only time I managed to break away was to get interviewed by the local TV station.  http://www.waow.com/global/video/flash/popupplayer.asp?vt1=v&clipFormat=flv&clipId1=5049001&at1=News&h1=Kayakers%20hit%20the%20water%20in%20Wausau&flvUri=&partnerclipid=&rnd=25017521

Once again thanks to Wausau Whitewater for another great year!  I can’t wait until next year.

Barking Dog Squirt Session.

2010
08.12

Last weekend Noah and I were on the South Fork of the American river practicing our underwater kayaking skills.  Not only is barking dog a fantastic play wave, but it is also a world class mystery spot.  Enjoy the video.

South Silver

2010
07.12

This past Saturday a solid group of us got out to get on South Silver before it ran out of water.  We managed to catch it with around 50-60 cfs.  It was a bit low but it was still good to go 100%.  For those of you who don’t know about this run it is Disneyland for kayakers.  It drops 700 feet per mile and is actually very safe.  The clean granite makes for some of the most fun you can have in a boat.  Enjoy the video!

My new squirt boat!

2010
07.12

I finally got my new squirt boat, and I am in love.  The great folks at Murky Water built me a Ninja.  It is unreal!  It has been over 15 years since I was last in a squirt boat, and i can not figure out why it has taken me so long to get another.  I know that from hear on out I will make sure I have one.  Here is a short video my friend Ty made with his I -Phone.  Not bad quality for a phone.  This spot is on the Truckee river, but we we are starting to lose water and it is losing its power.  I was still able to milk it for a few 9-10 second rides.  We also managed to make three very tired dogs in the process.  Enjoy.

West Walker

2010
07.12

The west Walker is a non stop roller coaster ride!  Noah, Newt, and I ran it a few weeks back with around 1000 cfs.  We managed to run 11 river miles in just a few minutes over one hour.  You really get to put your rear and run skills to the test with this run.  It has a wide range of levels that it is good at.  We were on the high side of medium with our flow.  Enjoy the video.

Sierra City, North Yuba river

2010
07.09

I have had this footage on the computer for a while, but I have been slack on putting it together.  The video actually covers a number of different sections of the North Yuba.  It is everything below loves falls to Downieville.  In order from top to bottom we have Wild Plum, Sierra City, Ladies Canyon, and Boss Moss.  I am about 90% sure of that sequence.  We covered about 12 miles in all and it was a great day.  Now that the water is dropping it will be time to move up stream to Loves Falls.  Enjoy the video.

More fun with the Go-Pro in the Reno whitewater park!

2010
06.24

With all of the water that we have had in the Sierra, not only has the creeking been great but we have had a bunch of fantastic play as well.  Noah and I decided to attach the Go-Pro to an old tent pole to see what we could do.  The footage is not bad, but we now know what we need to do to make it better.  A more rigid pole to attach the camera to that will extend further out over the hole will be the trick!  As for now enjoy the show!

Fun flows on the Truckee!

2010
06.24

We have had some really nice flows on the Truckee over the past few weeks.  It has given the Reno community the ability to get out and enjoy all of the different sections of river that we don’t normally get to boat on.  I was able to get a few laps on the upper sections of my new home river for the first time.  It only took me 4 years!  The upper sections have a bunch of non stop class 3 with one or two easy class 4 rapids thrown in for good measure.  There are also a pair of totally safe and fun to run dams.  I know it sounds bad, but they are really good to go and they are a great time.  Enjoy the video!
