The boat is loaded up for the pool session tonight. My plan is to work mostly on my offside roll, which is semi reliable. Most of the time I get up ok, but I’m not super confident in it. My roll on my on-side is more of a sweep roll, where my off side is more of the EJ style roll. The roll is good, my confidence isn’t. I’ll probably work on rolling with my hand paddles again. Last time I got 9 in a row before I swam. Probably a confidence thing now, I have the technique ok and just need to commit better.
All this to say, I’m planning on heading up to the East Race on Saturday and I know that I need to spend some time upside down. I need to work on catching eddies, s-turns, and ferrying. While doing that I need to work on my combat roll. I had one at the bottom of the Race last year, but after a day of swiftwater rescue clinic my energy and courage were shot so I didn’t keep going. Earlier this spring on the Flatrock I took a swim, simply because I hit an eddy line wrong, flipped, and gave in to panic. So I know that I just need some work on my combat roll to build my confidence.
