So this weekend we decided we are going to rent some Kayaks just to get a feel for what we want to do. I am excited to get out on the water and paddle around. I don’t really care if I am riding a log paddling with a dead beaver… I am Psyched.
Let you know how it goes on Monday.
Chuck has opened a can of worms!
After visiting Chuck in his world famous Canoe and Kayak emporium, we ( Stacy and I ) started discussing what Kayak to buy. I have now discovered we have a fundamental difference in what we want to do in the water. She would like to get some exercise, sun, commune with nature, maybe take some photos. Me…Well all that is fine and dandy….but what about the adrenalin rush….. Waves crashing, rocks barreling at my head…the smell of urine stained shorts from being near death…( stay away from the light Carol Ann)…… UGH what are we to do.
I would love to spend time with her, paddling on Golden Pond. Great! But I feel the call of the rapids….
I guess I am in for a bit more expensive venture than I thought.2 Rec, 2 White Water and 2 Sea Kayaks..Maybe I will get her a Tandem and me a White Water….. or maybe you will see us putting along in our Recreational Yaks, with a nice lunch and a bottle of wine strapped to the top. I hate acting my age. (man I am getting old)
Oh my gosh! Who would have thought there were so many choices in Kayaks!
My wife and I stopped in the local Kayak/ Canoe store to check out what was available. Little did I know there was such a wide variety to choose from.
The sales person, lets call him Chuck ( aren’t all salespeople called Chuck?) was a wealth of knowledge and a bundle of energy ( can you say decaf!).
Chuck was so glad that we came in, I thought he may be a long lost son. His enthusiasm for the sport was impressive and a bit scary. Right from the start he asked probing questions like “How long you been paddling?”, “What length are you looking for?” Sea? White water? Rec? Open? Closed? Skeg? Rudder? Rocker? Width? Price? Options? Accessories?
Umh Chuck I just wanted a Kayak……..
Well I left the store without buying anything feeling oddly disoriented , like in a boat at night without power or an oar. I think I need to do some real research and figure out what we want to do with our kayaks. ( we live near the ocean, lakes and rivers…….hmmmm , Can I get a combo Sea and Rec? No that sounds way to close to sea wreck…….)
Oh well off to the internet where I can browse without Chuck,
My wife and I are beginning to explore a paddlers life. I hope to be writing about our journey into the store, purchasing the equipment, taking the lessons and experiencing the connection. Please feel free to comment and give us suggestions as we are open to, and welcome all suggestions.
We hope to see you on the water!
