Last week I was on vacation in Utah, just north of Marysvale. One morning I took a guided whitewater trip on the Sevier River; most of our group went with the large raft, but three of us chose to go it alone in NRS inflatable kayaks. Our trip was about 10 miles long, and included stretches of class II and III rapids; I’m pleased to say that I stayed firmly in my kayak at all times (though I came close to getting tossed once or twice).
The one downside is that, not having planned ahead, I had none of my own gear on this trip; the inflatable kayak, the paddle (no offset! normal shaft diameter! Arg!), PFD, and helmet were all rented. And I didn’t have my paddling gloves, either. By the end of the trip, I had impressive blisters on my thumbs, achy wrists, and no real evidence as to how I will handle this kind of whitewater in my own boat.
Ah, well. Next time.
