El Salto update, just for Bill Payne!

November 21st, 2008 by Aaron

The El Salto is the headwaters of the Rio Valles. This section is well known among anyone who has ever boated in The Huasteca Region of Mexico. It contains 20 of the best examples of travertine waterfalls in the area.
This is the Put in Falls just below the hydro plant.

This second waterfall only runs when the hydro lets water pass by. It is a 19 footer.

Luminosa with plenty of water. Notice the multiple lines, hero and chicken!

Travertine watefalls help you develop the patience to get a good tuck. Jaistemai has some good form here. A free fall of 30 feet also helps.

More drops.

This drop is now known as Fil’s Favorite…just remember! RIGHT BUTT CHEEK!!!!

See ya in Mexico…

Kayak Huasteca on Minas Viejas.

November 11th, 2008 by Aaron

We ran a tributary of the Rio Valles, called Minas Viejas, on Monday. it was a big crew, 8 in all. Me, Fil, Rocky, Alex, Nate, Jaistemai, Jorge, and Amilkar. We found the 9 miles of whitewater, continuous and amazing! Probably 50 drops in that few miles. One of the drops is 135 feet tall.

One of the many drops above the Portage.

The portage.

After the portage…four more miles of whitewater. Minas Viejas

More big slides..Minas Viejas

Last but not least.

Plus some awesome read and run through out the entire river.

Enjoy the pics.

Waterfalls

November 8th, 2008 by Aaron

We are starting to figure out that the more you drop waterfalls, the better you become. Who would have thought? There is an awareness that you acquire after 20 or 30 drops. We have the perfect playground here in Valles. 7 drops of many different natures. Below is the left side of the 25 foot 6th waterfall.

Time to get some more vertical feet tomorrow.

So you want to learn to stomp landings, late boof, melt down, and free wheel? The Micos section of the Rio Valles is the perfect training ground.
downstream from top of powerplant
This is the view from the power plant roof!
Out of 11 waterfalls and slides, they are as big as 65 feet, and as small as 2 feet. What more can you ask for? Fil on the second waterfall.
This is Fil taking flight.
right now the water levels are great. we have more water than ever before. The summer storms have pumped up the water table and we get to enjoy.
nice 10 footer
This is the right line on the Serpiente.
Did I mention that every drop has multiple lines. Most can be run over and over, all you need is a throw bag and a strong back.
29 feet of sweet...
Second to last drop, you can run this as high as 29 or down to 16 feet. Click on any of these pics to see full size.
Bad boy
Jaistemai is running the Bad Boy side of the last falls. Absolutely full of water. Gotta love mexico in the winter. See you all later.

Mexico at its finest!

November 1st, 2008 by Aaron

November is always an amazing month to be south of the border. Plenty of fiestas and tons of water in different rivers. Many runs are only accessible in the next 2 months.
View of Micos from the overlook.
The overlook showed us that Micos was chock full of water!

Fil is boofing the first drop. 22ft

We took some excellent video, but each day will be better. Tomorrow we will be filming all day at the cascadas.

The take out was all class V. The jeep had plenty of 4×4 action.

We will be running :El Salto, Upper Santa Maria, San Nicolas and many others in the next few weeks. Click on any of these photos to see the full size image.
SYOTR in Mexico that is!
