Beautiful Day on the Micos.

February 28th, 2008 by Aaron

Today had a high temperature of 75 degrees, it was mostly sunny and the river was flowing. Time to go!

We ran the waterfall section with plenty of time to spare. You can run these drops in about 10 minutes if you hurry. We usually take 3 or 4 hours. It’s like a disneyworld for kayakers, plenty of freefall with very small consequence. Check out Andrew’s paddle in the shot below.

After the seven falls we cruised back to CD Valles for some chiles relleno de queso…delicioso!

See you next time. Hope everyone is staying warm.

Rio Tampaon

February 22nd, 2008 by Aaron

The Rio Tampaon is actually the fifth canyon of the Santa Maria. Right now there is still quite a bit of flow. The water will stay a turquoise color for the rest of the summer, until the september rains begin.Marjie on raton dos
This run is class 3+ right now, there is a raft portage around a large undercut and of course the portage over Puente de Dios. This bridge is actually a river on top of a river. Over time the calcium from the spring waters, fifty feet above river left, have built this puente. it is incredible to see!Puente de Dios
All the rapids lie above the puente, they are easily scouted and clear of strainers.ratones The trip is about five hours on the river and another two in the van. A nice long day, ending with a great mexican meal and some cold beer.mmmmmm

El Salto

February 20th, 2008 by Aaron

Today was a great day on the El Salto section of the Rio Naranjo. The entire river is passing through the power plant so we put in on the discharge canal. The water was crystal clear and warm. We have been trying to hit this run at least once a week. There are so many clean drops above 20 feet. Some are stairsteps, and others clean free fall. Aquario..el salto There are a few sticky holes but the creek boats usually make short work of those.curtina…el salto
All in all, there are 15 drops in 2 miles. 3 Are more than 22 feet. Really nice gradient, the river saves it all for the cascadas. Kayak Huasteca will be running regular trips to El Salto. If this is what your interested in check us out and send an e-mail to  paddletime at gmail.com.
