After the pool clinic in knoxville we drove 7 hrs overnight to Richmond, Virginia for a clinic on the Pony Pasture section of the James River. Our first step was to stop at the local dealer Appomotox to talk to the employees and to see what a great store they have. When we arrived a father and son from norway was getting pretty much every piece of gear you could ever need. All the way from new shiny linear all stars to NRS gloves. The first thing we did was get them fully set up in their new boats and helped them get nice and comfortable. After that we showed them all the All Water and the new  finished Villain, and a whole bunch of other stuff.  Once we were done with all that we were doing a clinic on the Pony Pasture but first we went to a fun little park and play on the upper section of the river for a little while. The spots were nice to mess around in, they were a little shallow but still really fun. We got to meet some of the locals and paddle with them for a little while. After a while it was time to do a short drive to the very nice take out for the run. We wound up having the all water fall off the RV on the way but it was fine. We got a shuttle up to the top and put on the river. When you come around the corner you could see that we were going to paddle right into the city, it really was a cool view. The first spot was a catch on the fly with a nice wave behind it. We spent a little while there surfing and throwing some blunts and backstabs. Then we ferried across to the other side of the river where there was a nice little wave with great macho move waves above it(for those that don’t know, a macho move is a loop downstream over a wave). I spent a while there playing and messing around. A lot of people liked that wave. After a lot of surfing we went down to the next rapid which was the biggest and one of the coolest. It started off with a decent little wave with a nice hole behind it, then it got bigger and had a big pour over on the left and a wave on the right. I boofed the corner of the hole and then surfed the wave a little bit. Then towards the bottom of the rapid there was some more holes to throw so more tricks in. then the rapid ending under the highway bridge with a walkway underneath it. This is when we really got into the city. The next little rapid had a riverwide 2 foot ledge that we boofed. That led into the last rapid which wasn’t very hard, but the whole left side went under city pipes. It looked bad to go over there obviously. One of the guys with us told me to follow him over this boof and he missed his boof and got a little worked and wound up swimming. But when he swam he got his vest stuck on a rock. His head was above the water but he was a little freaked out. He wound up falling off the rock and being fine but it was fright for sure. Then it was a short paddle out to the finish. The take out was perfect, right by the cars. We hung out in the parking lot for a while and then heading to go get some food at the Camel restaurant. It was a great day and we had 2 and a half hr drive to DC for a clinic on the potomac in the morning……………..
